Google Maps New Solution for Ride & Delivery Companies

Today, the Google Maps Platform, geared towards developers utilizing Google Maps, is introducing a new offering designed for companies specializing in on-demand rides and delivery services. This service integrates existing platform features with new functionalities focused on locating available drivers and providing customers with real-time updates on their trips and orders.

This marks a further expansion for Google Maps Platform into this sector. Previously, in 2018, the company launched a solution providing in-app navigation specifically for ridesharing businesses. While the initial focus wasn’t on delivery services, the significant growth in that market—particularly accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic—has prompted this new development.

“Leveraging 15 years of experience mapping the world, the On-demand Rides & Deliveries solution empowers businesses to enhance their operations and redefine the experience for both drivers and customers, from the moment a booking is made through to arrival or delivery—all while maintaining predictable costs per completed trip,” explains Eli Danziger, a senior product manager at Google, in the official announcement.

The foundation of this service is the Google Maps routing functionality, which developers can customize for various delivery methods, such as bicycle or motorcycle, and to determine the most efficient routes based on distance or speed. The “Routes Preferred” capability also provides estimated arrival times for urgent deliveries and helps calculate accurate pricing.

Another key feature of this platform is the ability for developers to rapidly create a system for identifying nearby drivers. Appropriately named “Nearby Drivers,” this feature allows developers to pinpoint the closest available driver with a single API request. They can also implement customized ranking systems, tailored to their specific requirements, to ensure optimal driver-route matching.

As expected, the platform also includes support for in-app navigation, seamlessly integrated with the other features.

Developers can readily incorporate Google’s real-time trip and order tracking features to “provide customers with continuous updates from pickup to drop-off or delivery, including a live view of the driver’s location, route, and estimated time of arrival.”

These capabilities are largely standard expectations for contemporary ridesharing and delivery applications. However, the underlying technology is sophisticated, and many delivery companies have invested heavily in building these features internally. While established companies may not readily switch to Google’s platform, it could enable smaller businesses to operate more effectively or enter new markets without the substantial expense of developing this technology independently—or assembling it from multiple providers.
