Google Search Updates: Latest News & Changes

Google revealed a series of enhancements to its primary search engine today, with a significant emphasis on the integration of artificial intelligence to improve the user experience. These advancements include improved capabilities for providing precise answers to highly specific inquiries, handling broader questions more effectively, and a refined algorithm designed to better interpret and correct errors in search terms. The company also detailed updates to Google Lens and other tools related to Search functionality.

Many of these improvements are designed for practicality, though some offer a degree of entertainment as well. For instance, users can now hum a tune, and the Google Assistant will attempt to identify the corresponding song.

Google highlighted that approximately one in ten search queries contain a misspelling. While the company already addresses this issue effectively with its “did you mean” functionality, they are now introducing an upgraded algorithm. This new system utilizes a sophisticated deep neural network containing 680 million parameters to gain a more nuanced understanding of the context behind each search.

A further notable addition is the integration of data from sources previously accessible only through Google’s Open Data Commons directly into Search results. Now, when posing questions such as “employment in Chicago,” Google’s Knowledge Graph will display relevant graphs and data directly on the search results page.

Another update involves the system’s enhanced ability to index specific sections of webpages to deliver more targeted responses to specialized queries, such as “how do I determine if my windows have UV glass?” The system can now direct users to the relevant paragraph within a discussion forum. Google estimates this new system will positively impact around 7% of all searches.

Regarding more expansive questions, Google is now leveraging its AI system to achieve a deeper comprehension of a page’s content, leading to more accurate and relevant answers.

Increasingly, information is presented in video format. Google is now employing advanced computer and speech recognition technologies to identify key moments within videos—a feature already available in Search, but one that this new algorithm aims to improve, particularly for videos lacking creator-provided tagging.

Additional updates include enhancements to Google Lens, allowing users to request the app to read aloud text from a photograph of a book, regardless of the language. Lens can also now interpret mathematical formulas and provide step-by-step solutions, along with relevant videos, extending beyond mathematics to encompass chemistry, biology, and physics.

With the upcoming holiday shopping season in mind, Google has also launched several updates to its shopping services. A new feature in Chrome and the Google App enables users to long-press on any image to discover related products. For those seeking fashion guidance, the service will also suggest complementary items frequently appearing in similar images.

When shopping for a vehicle, users can now utilize augmented reality to visualize the car in their own driveway.

Within Google Maps, users can now point their device at a restaurant or local business while using AR walking directions to view its operating hours, for example.

A new Maps feature also displays real-time busyness information directly on the map, eliminating the need for a specific search to determine current crowd levels. This is a particularly valuable feature in the current year.

Throughout the presentation (which took the form of a video premiere, reflecting current circumstances), Prabhakar Raghavan, Google’s head of search, also mentioned that the 2019 BERT update to the natural language understanding component of its Search system is now applied to nearly all queries and is available in a wider range of languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi, Arabic, German, and Amharic. This represents just a portion of the over 3,600 updates implemented to the search product in 2019.

These announcements occur amidst increased scrutiny of Google’s business practices by various governments. Consequently, the event also emphasized Google’s commitment to privacy and highlighted that Google Search is freely accessible to everyone, with ranking policies applied “fairly” to all websites. However, companies like Yelp might offer a different perspective on this assertion.
