Google has recently joined this movement, initiating testing of a new vibe-coding tool named Opal. This tool is being made available to users within the U.S. via Google Labs, a platform utilized by the company for experimentation with innovative technologies.

Creating Applications with Text Prompts

Opal empowers users to generate simplified web applications through the use of textual prompts. Alternatively, existing applications from a curated gallery can be modified and adapted.

Users simply input a description outlining the desired application functionality. The tool then leverages various Google models to facilitate the creation process.

Visual Workflow and Editing Capabilities

Upon completion, the application is accessible within an editor panel. This panel displays a visual representation of the input, output, and generation stages.

Each step within the workflow can be examined, revealing the underlying prompt that governs its execution. Users have the ability to modify these prompts as needed.

Furthermore, additional steps can be incorporated manually from Opal’s integrated toolbar.

Sharing and Collaboration

Opal facilitates the publication of newly created applications to the web. A shareable link is then generated, allowing others to test the application using their individual Google accounts.

Expanding Accessibility to App Development

While Google’s AI studio already provides developers with prompt-based application building capabilities, Opal’s visual workflow suggests a broader target demographic.

The company is now positioned alongside competitors like Canva, Figma, and Replit. These platforms are focused on enabling individuals without traditional coding expertise to create application prototypes.
