Google Advanced Protection Program Gets New Device Security Features

Google Enhances Advanced Protection Program for Android
During the Android Show, held in anticipation of Google I/O 2025, Google revealed enhancements to its Advanced Protection program. This program is specifically engineered to safeguard high-profile individuals – including journalists and political figures – against a range of digital security risks. The updates will be integrated with the Android 16 operating system.
New Security Features in Android 16
The forthcoming features are designed to provide an additional layer of defense against device compromise. They include a novel method for storing device logs, exclusively accessible to the user. Furthermore, protection against unwanted spam calls and an automated restart capability when the device remains locked for an extended period are also being implemented.
Intrusion Logging and Threat Analysis
Android 16 will introduce an intrusion logging capability to facilitate thorough threat analysis. Device logs will be securely stored in the cloud utilizing end-to-end encryption. Should a device compromise be suspected, these logs can be leveraged for detailed investigation.
Enhanced USB Security
A new USB protection mechanism is being added. This feature will restrict USB connections to charging-only functionality while the device is locked, preventing unauthorized data access.
Automatic Restart for Prolonged Lock States
Devices enrolled in the Advanced Protection program will now automatically restart if they remain locked for a continuous period of 72 hours. This functionality was initially noted in a recent update to Google Play services, as reported by TechCrunch last month.
Wi-Fi Network Security
With Android 16 and Advanced Protection enabled, the system will proactively prevent automatic reconnection to Wi-Fi networks deemed insecure. This helps mitigate the risk of man-in-the-middle attacks and data interception.
Real-time Scam Detection
The program is also gaining the ability to privately analyze ongoing phone conversations on the device. This aims to identify and alert users to potential scams, a feature previously launched for Pixel phones earlier this year.
