Google Expands Renewable Energy Portfolio with 600 MW Solar Power Purchase

Google is increasing its commitment to sustainable energy by procuring an additional 600 megawatts of solar power. This electricity will be utilized to power the company’s extensive network of data centers.

New Solar Projects in South Carolina

The latest agreement focuses on solar and energy storage initiatives currently under development in South Carolina, facilitated by EnergyRe. EnergyRe reports a development pipeline exceeding 16 gigawatts.

Many of the projects listed by the company typically range from approximately 60 MW to 75 MW in solar capacity, although larger-scale installations are also included.

Significant Investment in Renewable Energy

Google has demonstrated a substantial increase in renewable energy investments recently. In the previous year, a $20 billion commitment was made to Intersect Power and TPG Rise Climate.

This investment is intended to facilitate the construction of sufficient zero-carbon power plants to supply electricity for several gigawatts of data center operations.

Furthermore, in January, a contract was finalized to acquire over 700 megawatts of solar projects located in Oklahoma from Leeward Renewable Energy.

Carbon Footprint Reduction Goals

Similar to other leading technology firms, Google has publicly stated its objective to achieve a carbon-neutral energy footprint by the year 2030.

Consistent investment in renewable sources has steadily propelled Google and its competitors towards this ambitious target.

AI and Increased Energy Demand

However, the rapid advancement of AI and the associated computational demands have introduced complexities to these calculations. This has necessitated an acceleration in power procurement for Google and other companies.

In 2023 alone, Google secured contracts for 4 gigawatts of clean power, representing the most recent year for which data has been published.

Industry-Wide Trend

Google is not the sole participant in this trend. Microsoft has also significantly expanded its solar capacity this year, including a 475 megawatt purchase in March.

Meta similarly entered into agreements for 595 megawatts and 505 megawatts of solar power in January and February, respectively.
