Google I/O 2024: Dates & What to Expect

The Evolution of Tech Conferences During the Pandemic
The arrival of the pandemic in the U.S. prompted companies to rapidly reassess their established, in-person developer events. Both Apple and Microsoft transitioned to virtual formats, an approach that yielded varying degrees of success.
Google initially responded by entirely canceling its annual I/O conference. The event, traditionally hosted each May at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California, was called off.
Prioritizing Health and Safety
The decision stemmed from concerns regarding the well-being of developers, employees, and the surrounding communities. It also aligned with the “shelter in place” directives issued by Bay Area counties at the time. Google communicated that I/O would not proceed in any form that year.
Google I/O Returns as a Virtual Event
Following a year-long hiatus, Google I/O is scheduled to return, albeit in a virtual capacity. Invitations, presented in the company’s signature puzzle format, were distributed today, announcing the event dates as May 18-20.
Similar to other recent online-only conferences, attendance at this iteration of the developer conference will be free and accessible to all. It is expected to be a live broadcast.
A Trend of Virtual Events
Google is among a growing number of organizations continuing to opt for virtual events in 2021. Despite the progress of vaccine distribution in the United States, uncertainties and anxieties persist regarding potential virus transmission at large gatherings.
Even outdoor venues, such as those traditionally used for I/O, present potential risks. Apple has announced a second consecutive virtual WWDC, scheduled for June. Microsoft’s Build conference will also be held virtually, running from May 25-27.
