Google Gemini's Imagen 3: Design Your Own Chess Pieces

Google's GenChess: A Novel Take on the Classic Game
Google Labs, the division dedicated to experimental projects within the technology company, has recently launched a unique online experience centered around chess.
Introducing GenChess and Gemini Imagen 3
This web-based experiment, dubbed GenChess, leverages Gemini Imagen 3, Google’s advanced image-generation model. It allows users to personalize their chess pieces through the use of text prompts.
How to Customize Your Chess Set
Accessing the game requires a login with a Gmail account. Upon logging in, users can initiate the customization process by selecting the “Generate” button.
Players can then input a desired theme for their chess set, such as designs inspired by food items like sushi or pizza.
Classic vs. Creative Styles and Piece Editing
GenChess provides two distinct aesthetic styles: classic and creative. The classic style emulates a traditional chess set’s appearance.
Conversely, the creative style offers a more abstract and unconventional visual representation. After a complete set is generated, individual pieces can be further refined.
For instance, if the generated king piece is not to the player’s liking, additional text prompts can be used to adjust its design.
Playing Against the AI
Once satisfied with their customized set, players can generate an AI opponent. During testing, a sushi-themed set was paired against an opponent featuring a taco-inspired design.
The game offers three difficulty levels – easy, medium, and hard – and two timer options: 5/3 and 10/0.
The Purpose Behind GenChess
Google describes the experiment as a demonstration of the synergy between AI, design, and the game of chess.
A company spokesperson stated the project aims to make image generation accessible and engaging for everyone.
Additional Chess-Related Initiatives
Alongside the launch of GenChess, Google announced four further chess-focused projects coinciding with the start of the World Chess Championship.
Partnership with FIDE and Kaggle Coding Challenge
This includes a collaboration with the International Chess Federation (FIDE). They are hosting a coding challenge on Kaggle, Google’s platform for data scientists and machine learning engineers, to develop AI chess engines.
Chess Gem for Gemini Advanced
Next month will see the release of Chess Gem, a new feature for the Gemini app.
This conversational game allows players to compete against a language model within the Gemini interface, complete with interactive dialogue.
However, access to Chess Gem will be limited to subscribers of Gemini Advanced.
