Google Gemini Receipts: AI Chat Updates

Gemini AI Now Retains Conversational Context

Google has announced that its Gemini AI chatbot is now capable of adapting its responses based on the context of prior interactions. This update, detailed in a company blog post released on Thursday, allows Gemini to summarize past dialogues or retrieve information previously disclosed in separate conversation threads.

Enhanced User Experience Through Memory

This new functionality eliminates the need for users to reiterate previously provided details to the chatbot. Furthermore, it removes the necessity of manually searching through older conversation logs to locate specific information.

The ability for Gemini to remember conversations is currently being deployed to subscribers of Google One AI Premium, Google’s $20 monthly AI chatbot service, who communicate in English. Expansion to additional languages and enterprise account users is planned for the coming weeks.

Addressing Privacy Considerations

The goal of this feature is to create a more seamless and personalized experience with Gemini. However, Google acknowledges that some users may have concerns regarding the storage of past conversation data.

To mitigate these concerns, Google provides users with controls to review, delete, or manage the retention period of their chat history. The recall feature can also be completely disabled through the “My Activity” page within Gemini. Google emphasizes that user conversation histories are not used to train its AI models.

Industry Trend Towards AI Memory

Several AI chatbot developers are actively exploring and implementing memory and recall capabilities within their platforms.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously identified enhanced memory as a highly requested feature for ChatGPT.

Existing Memory Features vs. Full Recall

Both Google and OpenAI have previously introduced more generalized “memory” features for their respective chatbots over the past year. These features allow ChatGPT and Gemini to retain user preferences, such as preferred pronouns, dietary restrictions, or transportation choices.

However, these existing features do not, by default, store and recall the entirety of a user’s chat history.
