Google Restructures AI Teams to Expedite Development

In an effort to accelerate its advancements in artificial intelligence, Google is consolidating the teams responsible for building its AI services, platforms, and associated tools.

Logan Kilpatrick, the product lead for Google’s AI Studio developer platform, announced on Thursday via X that the AI Studio team and the team focused on the Gemini model API will be integrated into Google DeepMind.

Formation of Google DeepMind

Google DeepMind was established in 2023 through the unification of Google’s DeepMind team and the Google Brain team from Google Research.

This division serves as the core AI research and development arm, driving innovation behind many of Google’s recent AI products, notably the Gemini series.

Kilpatrick stated that this restructuring will “double down on our already deep collaboration and accelerate the research to developer pipeline.” He affirmed that the team’s core mission will remain unchanged.

Increased Accessibility of DeepMind’s Work

Jaana Dogan, an engineer involved in the transition to Google DeepMind, expressed on X that the reorganization will facilitate making DeepMind’s work more accessible to the public.

She anticipates improvements in APIs, increased open-source contributions, and the development of more tools, hinting at further advancements to come.

Google was contacted by TechCrunch for further details, and this article will be updated upon receiving a response.

Previous Reorganizations and Strategic Focus

This integration of developer-focused AI teams into Google DeepMind follows the earlier move of the team behind the Gemini chatbot to the same division.

At that time, Google CEO Sundar Pichai explained that the restructuring aimed to “keep increasing the pace of progress” in Google’s AI development efforts.

In recent months, Google has also transferred its models, research, and responsible AI teams to Google DeepMind.

Gemini’s Momentum and Future Goals

According to audio from a December Google all-hands meeting obtained by CNBC, Pichai described the Gemini chatbot as demonstrating “strong momentum.”

However, he also acknowledged the need for further work in 2025 to “close the gap and establish a leadership position.”

Pichai reportedly emphasized that “scaling Gemini on the consumer side will be our biggest focus [in 2025].” He stressed the importance of urgency and the need for faster progress, recognizing the significant stakes involved.
