Google Flights Shows Carbon Emissions for Flights

Google Introduces Flight Carbon Emission Estimates

A new feature was introduced by Google on Wednesday designed to inform users about the environmental impact of air travel. Beginning today, carbon emission estimates will be displayed for the vast majority of flights directly within Google search results.

These estimates are presented alongside flight pricing and duration information. Google explains that this addition empowers users to consider carbon emissions as a key factor when making travel arrangements, alongside traditional considerations like price and schedule.

Detailed Emission Calculations

The provided estimates are not generalized; they are specific to each flight and even to the class of seat. For example, emissions will differ between economy and first-class bookings, as larger seats contribute to a greater overall carbon footprint.

Furthermore, the age of the aircraft plays a significant role, with newer planes generally producing fewer pollutants than older models.

Identifying Lower-Emission Flights

Flights demonstrating reduced emissions will be visually distinguished with a green badge. Users prioritizing environmental impact can now sort search results to prioritize flights with the lowest carbon output.

Emissions levels are categorized as higher, typical, lower, or unknown, providing a clear indication of each flight’s impact.

Data Sources and Future Improvements

Google’s calculations are based on a combination of data from the European Environmental Agency and specific flight details supplied by airlines. This includes information regarding aircraft type and the total number of seats.

The company acknowledges that actual emissions can fluctuate due to variables like aircraft model, configuration, speed, altitude, and the distance of the flight. Continuous refinement of these estimates is planned to enhance accuracy over time.

Expanding Sustainable Travel Options

According to Richard Holden, Google’s vice-president of travel products, this update to Google Flights is part of a broader initiative to support sustainable choices in daily life.

This launch follows the recent introduction of eco-friendly routing within Google Maps for both iOS and Android users. This feature allows drivers to select between the quickest route and the most fuel-efficient option.

Google anticipates that this eco-routing functionality could help Maps users collectively avoid over 1 million tons of carbon emissions annually. Expansion of eco-friendly routing to Europe is scheduled for next year.
