Silence Chrome Notifications: How to Stop Pesky Alerts

Chrome Browser to Reduce Notification Clutter

A significant update is coming to Google’s Chrome web browser, promising a less disruptive user experience.

The technology company announced a new capability on Friday designed to automatically disable browser notifications from websites with which users haven’t recently interacted.

Implementation Across Platforms

This feature will be rolled out on both the Android version of Chrome and the desktop application.

It builds upon existing security measures, such as the Safety Check feature, which already revokes camera and location access from infrequently visited websites.

Acknowledging Notification Fatigue

Google acknowledges that the current system of browser notifications may not be optimal.

Internal data reveals that a substantial number of notifications are sent, yet user interaction remains remarkably low – less than 1% of notifications receive any engagement.

This suggests a widespread issue of notification fatigue among users.

Selective Notification Management

Despite the changes, Chrome will continue to allow notifications from installed web applications.

The focus is on reducing the volume of alerts from websites exhibiting low user engagement coupled with high notification frequency.

This adjustment may encourage websites employing aggressive notification tactics to reassess their strategies to avoid complete access loss.

A Long-Standing User Concern

Unsolicited notifications have been a persistent problem for internet users for some time.

Apple, for example, responded to user complaints by introducing controls on iPhones that allow for scheduled notification summaries, muting options, and direct disabling from within the notification itself.

User Control and Transparency

Google will notify users when notification permissions are revoked, providing an opportunity to reinstate them if desired.

Furthermore, users can completely disable this automatic revocation feature if they prefer to manage notifications manually.

Testing and Results

Prior to the official launch, the feature underwent testing.

Results indicated that the changes did not significantly affect the overall number of notification clicks, reinforcing the notion that user engagement with these pop-ups was minimal to begin with.

This suggests the update will primarily improve user experience by reducing unwanted interruptions.
