Google's 3D Art Exhibition: Pocket Gallery Comes to the Web

Google Arts & Culture Expands Pocket Galleries to the Web

In 2018, Google’s Arts & Culture initiative introduced “Pocket Gallery” experiences. These allowed smartphone users with augmented reality (AR) capabilities to view artwork from renowned artists like Johannes Vermeer in a novel way.

Previously, access to certain pieces was limited. Now, the team has announced the complete series of Pocket Galleries is accessible to everyone via the web.

Initial Goals and Expanded Accessibility

The original intention behind Pocket Galleries was to deliver digitally recreated, never-before-seen exhibitions directly to users in a three-dimensional format. This web expansion broadens access.

The galleries can now be experienced on desktop computers and smartphones, regardless of AR functionality. This increased visibility will reach a wider audience.

Exploring the Virtual Galleries

“Simply open your preferred browser to explore all our Pocket Galleries in 3D,” stated Joe Shepherd, Associate Product Manager at Google Arts & Culture, in a recent blog post.

Users can embark on virtual art tours, explore the Chauvet Cave’s ancient paintings, examine miniature scenes from ancient India, and delve into the complexities of Klimt vs. Klimt.

Enhanced User Experience

The platform now provides opportunities to learn about the history of specific artifacts. Users can also closely examine intricate details within various artworks.

Many galleries feature audio tours. These guides provide historical context and additional insights, enriching the exhibition experience.

Google is also launching a new exhibition in partnership with Réunion des musées nationaux – Grand Palais (Rmn-GP) in France.

This virtual tour allows users to discover “maritime tales, stormy landscapes, and shores swathed in light.” The exhibition showcases 40 marine masterpieces.

These artworks are drawn from the collections of the Palace of Versailles, the Louvre, and other significant European museums.

Looking Ahead

“We hope you’ll enjoy uncovering maritime mysteries through our latest gallery, and experiencing our full collection of cultural curiosities from the new perspective of Pocket Galleries on the web,” Shepherd added.

To access the Pocket Galleries exhibitions, visit the Google Arts & Culture website. Alternatively, download the Google Arts & Culture app for Android or iOS.
