Gemini on Google TV: AI Comes to Your Streamer

Gemini Replaces Google Assistant on Google TV

Google revealed on Monday the commencement of a rollout of Gemini to the Google TV streamer, effectively superseding Google Assistant. The technology firm asserts this transition will empower users to interact with their devices using more conversational and intuitive voice commands.

Enhanced Voice Interaction

Users are now able to pose complex queries, such as, “I enjoy dramas, but my spouse prefers comedies. Can you suggest a film we might both appreciate?” when seeking film recommendations.

Alternatively, individuals can swiftly recap previous episodes of a show by inquiring, “What were the key events at the conclusion of Outlander’s last season?”

Google further illustrates that users can even ask open-ended questions like, “What is the currently popular new medical drama?”

Beyond Entertainment

The capabilities of Gemini for TV extend beyond entertainment, allowing users to pose a wide range of questions, mirroring the functionality available on their smartphones.

For instance, educational opportunities are expanded with prompts like, “Explain the reasons behind volcanic eruptions to a third-grade student.”

Gemini can also provide step-by-step guidance for do-it-yourself projects or culinary recipes, utilizing videos from YouTube, according to Google.

Accessing Gemini

To activate Gemini on the Google TV streamer, simply press the microphone button on your remote control.

Google states that this update will be deployed “over the coming weeks” to users who are 18 years of age or older.

Initial Availability and Future Expansion

This move follows Google’s September announcement regarding the introduction of Gemini for Google TV on select TCL devices.

The company previously indicated that later this year, Gemini would become available on the 2025 Hisense U7, U8, and UX models, as well as the 2025 TCL QM7K, QM8K, and X11K models.

In addition to the Google TV streamer, Gemini is also currently accessible on the Walmart Onn 4K Pro streaming device.

Part of a Larger Transition

Monday’s announcement aligns with Google’s broader strategy to replace Google Assistant with Gemini across its entire ecosystem of devices and platforms.

This plan was initially revealed at CES in January, where Google confirmed that Gemini would be integrated into Google TV during the current year.
