Circle to Search Now Available on iPhone - Google Update

Google Introduces Screen Search on iOS
A new update from Google, released on Wednesday, empowers iOS users to initiate searches directly from their screen content using a simple gesture within the Google Chrome or Google Search applications.
This functionality mirrors the existing “Circle to Search” feature found on Android devices, offering users a versatile method for identifying items visible on their screen.
Utilizing Google Lens for Screen Searches
Upon launch, iPhone users can leverage Google Lens to search by drawing around, highlighting, or simply tapping on elements displayed on their screen.
For example, while reading an article, users can quickly identify an artwork by circling it with Lens, instantly accessing relevant information.
Similarly, when viewing a video, Lens allows users to locate comparable items by circling the desired object.
Benefits and Strategic Implications
This feature streamlines visual searches, eliminating the need for screenshots or navigating to new browser tabs.
It also provides an alternative pathway to traditional web searches, a core aspect of Google’s business that may face challenges with the increasing adoption of AI technology.
Following a highlight or tap, users are presented with visual matches and related results.
The “Add to your search” option enables refinement of results based on criteria like color or brand, and follow-up questions can be posed for deeper exploration of a topic.
Accessing the New Feature
Currently, users can access the feature through the three-dot menu within the Chrome or Google app, selecting “Search Screen with Google Lens.”
Google plans to introduce a dedicated Lens icon in the address bar in the coming months for quicker access.
The rollout of this update is underway this week and will be available globally on iOS devices.
Expansion of AI Overviews in Google Lens
Alongside this launch, Google announced an expansion of AI Overviews, which present concise information summaries at the top of search results pages, to a wider range of Google Lens searches.
Previously, AI Overviews were displayed in Lens searches combining images and text.
Now, users will encounter AI Overviews even without adding supplementary text or questions to their searches.
As an illustration, a photograph of an unfamiliar car can trigger an AI Overview, providing immediate details and links to relevant online resources.
Availability of Expanded AI Overviews
This update is currently being deployed this week for English-language users in regions where AI Overviews are already available, beginning with the Google app on both Android and iOS platforms.
The update is also scheduled for release on Chrome for desktop and mobile devices in the near future.
