Gogoro Expands to China with Battery Swapping Stations

Gogoro Expands into China with Battery Swapping Network
Following an announcement five months prior regarding collaborations with leading Chinese two-wheel vehicle manufacturers, Gogoro has officially commenced operations in China. The initial rollout includes the establishment of 45 battery swapping stations in Hangzhou.
Horace Luke, Gogoro’s co-founder and CEO, communicated to TechCrunch that the company intends to increase this number to 80 stations by year-end. Further expansion into other significant cities is planned in conjunction with its partners, Yadea and Dachangjiang Group (DCJ).
Huan Huan Brand and Vehicle Integration
Within the Chinese market, Gogoro’s innovative battery swapping technology will be branded as Huan Huan. This represents a collaborative effort between Gogoro, Yadea, and DCJ.
Both Yadea and DCJ are actively developing vehicles designed to utilize Gogoro’s battery swapping system. Yadea has already launched two models available for purchase today, beginning in Hangzhou.
Regulatory Drivers and Market Opportunity
The anticipated consumer uptake is expected to be significantly influenced by evolving government regulations pertaining to electric two-wheel vehicles. These regulations mandate the adoption of lithium batteries, phasing out lead-acid alternatives.
It is estimated that approximately 270 million vehicles currently in operation do not comply with these new standards and will require retirement by 2025.
Gogoro’s Global Expansion and Partnerships
Last month, Gogoro revealed its plans to become a publicly listed company on Nasdaq through a $2.35 billion SPAC merger with Poema Global. The completion of this deal is projected for the first quarter of 2022.
Beyond its battery swapping network, Gogoro is recognized for its own line of premium two-wheel scooters. However, the company has strategically forged partnerships with other manufacturers to facilitate the production of vehicles compatible with its batteries and charging infrastructure.
These collaborations include agreements with prominent brands such as Yamaha, Suzuki, and AeonMotor. These partnerships have been instrumental in broadening the reach of Gogoro’s technology.
A recent agreement with Hero MotoCorp, the leading two-wheeled vehicle manufacturer in India, further underscores Gogoro’s global expansion strategy.
Accessibility and Market Positioning
“Historically, Gogoro has been perceived as a premium brand, potentially inaccessible to a large segment of the market,” Luke stated. “Through our collaborations with Yadea and DCJ, we aim to make our vehicles accessible to a wider consumer base, offering pricing comparable to existing mass-market options.”
This strategic move is designed to increase the affordability and availability of Gogoro’s technology to a broader range of customers.
