New Gemini-Powered Calendar Integration for Gmail

A recently launched Gmail feature, leveraging the power of Google’s Gemini AI, is now available to Google Workspace customers. Beginning Monday, users are able to seamlessly create Google Calendar events directly from within an email.

How the Feature Works

Gemini intelligently identifies calendar-relevant details within an email message. It then displays an “Add to calendar” button for user convenience.

Upon selecting this button, a side panel will appear in Gmail, confirming the event’s successful addition to the user’s calendar.

Current Limitations

Google has indicated in a blog announcement that this functionality is presently limited to the English language and is accessible only through the web interface.

Events generated via the “Add to calendar” option will not automatically include additional attendees. Furthermore, the feature will not function with emails that already contain extracted event information, such as confirmations for flights or restaurant bookings.

Eligibility and Activation

The new feature is available to users on Google Workspace Business and Enterprise subscriptions. It is also accessible to those with a Gemini Education, Gemini Education Premium, or Google One AI Premium plan.

Customers who previously subscribed to the now-discontinued Gemini Business or Gemini Enterprise add-ons remain eligible.

Administrators can activate the “Add to calendar” functionality by enabling smart features and personalization settings within the Workspace Admin console.

Expanding Gemini Capabilities in Gmail

The “Add to calendar” feature represents the latest addition to Gmail’s suite of Gemini-enhanced tools.

In June 2024, Google introduced new capabilities to the web version of Gmail, designed to assist users with email composition, thread summarization, and information retrieval from within their inboxes.

Select features were subsequently extended to the Gmail applications for iOS and Android devices towards the end of the previous year.
