Gillmor Gang: When Doves Cry - Tech Podcast Discussion

Reflections on Technology, Work, and the Pursuit of "Normal"

Typically, a short period is allowed to pass following a broadcast before analysis begins. While awaiting that settling period, our producer and director, Tina Chase Gillmor, examines the recording for concise segments that capture the essence and overall tone of the discussion. This particular episode, captured just over two weeks ago, delved extensively into politics and governance, deliberately avoiding discussion of a specific former leader, before transitioning to an exploration of the tech industry and its considerations regarding a potential return to traditional office environments.

Prince, George Harrison, and the Magic of Innovation

During the conversation, I inquired with Brent Leary regarding his perspective on the feasibility of widespread remote work, only to discover he was simultaneously engaged with the director’s cut of a renowned Prince music video. Brian Solis had previously shared with him a re-edited version of George Harrison’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction as a solo artist, showcasing a remarkable rendition of his iconic “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”

This performance featured an impressive ensemble of friends of the late Beatle, including Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, Jeff Lynne, and a surprising guitar solo by Prince, culminating in him dramatically tossing his instrument skyward. The updated video expands upon our appreciation of Prince and, notably, his interactions with the other musicians. Released 17 years later, it successfully preserves the original event’s magic while simultaneously enhancing our understanding of Prince’s captivating performance style.

Parallels Between Tech and the Vaccine Success

This event serves as a reminder of the kind of innovation we anticipate from the technology sector and its leading figures. The rapid development and deployment of vaccines weren’t solely the result of scientific breakthroughs and urgent global need; they also stemmed from a renewed belief in the potential for effective government and political collaboration. While the pace of recovery remains uncertain, a crucial question arises: what exactly are we recovering *to*?

Is the future a simple choice between exclusively office-based work, fully remote arrangements, or a hybrid model? Several tech companies are already adopting a hybrid approach, reopening offices while allowing employees to return for only a portion of the week.

A New Generation's Relationship with Technology

As a father of two daughters, I’ve observed with keen interest how they’ve grown up with technology as an inherent part of their lives, rather than a revolutionary change. My youngest daughter, for years, has organized her communication with us and her friends through text-based, emotionally-driven video messages, with occasional requests for in-person interactions. The pandemic necessitated this approach, and the skills acquired during this time are likely to endure as we move toward a safer environment.

Text messages offer asynchronous communication, allowing for delayed responses and information absorption. Voice calls are optional, and video chats are generally welcomed as opportunities for connection, but not necessarily a daily occurrence. A quick glance at her Instagram feed provides a sense of well-being, though lacking in specific details. This is appropriate; she likely requires emotional support to a similar degree as I do.

Prince's Mastery and the Evolution of the Music Industry

Prince, early in his career, demonstrated a deep understanding of musical history and a pragmatic approach to technological advancements pioneered by George Martin and the Beatles with albums like Revolver and Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. He embraced studio techniques, the multitracking innovations of Stevie Wonder, the experimental funk of Jimi Hendrix, and the sophisticated artistry of Miles Davis – synthesizing them all into his unique sound.

The music industry challenged him, and he responded by changing his name to a symbol and ultimately gaining control of his recordings. As he famously wrote, “Nothing compares 2 U.”

The Impact of Changing Consumption Models and Crypto

The music and entertainment industries have fundamentally altered how we consume their products. Musicians have been largely unable to tour for over a year, significantly impacting their income. Some are exploring the emerging world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) as a way to package and sell their work. Even seemingly humorous projects like Dogecoin have intersected with mainstream culture, appearing on Saturday Night Live with Elon Musk.

Interestingly, many found watching Dogecoin’s value plummet more entertaining than the comedy show itself.

Looking Ahead: Defining a New "Normal"

Eventually, the current turbulence will subside, allowing us to carefully select elements that will shape the future. While many desire a return to normalcy, there’s a growing sentiment that we deserve relief from the perceived inequities of our political and cultural systems, which often prioritize power over empathy. Just as Zoom filters allow us to customize our virtual backgrounds, it’s reasonable to envision a new work environment that blends the best aspects of our evolving world.
