Yahoo Mail in Thunderbird: Free Setup Guide

Accessing Yahoo! Mail in Thunderbird
If you’ve transitioned from Yahoo! to Gmail, favoring a desktop email client like Thunderbird, you might seek a similar solution for your Yahoo! account. The YPOPs! application offers a way to achieve this functionality without cost.
This open-source tool operates in the background, effectively simulating a web browser to enable POP access for downloading your email into a desktop client. However, a crucial disclaimer applies: utilizing this utility may contravene Yahoo!'s terms of service and could potentially lead to account termination. Proceed with caution and at your own discretion.
Alternatively, Yahoo! Mail Plus provides POP access for an annual fee of $20.
Installing the YPOPs! Client
The initial step involves downloading and installing the YPOPs! client. The installation process is straightforward; simply follow the on-screen prompts and ensure the client is running before proceeding further. No initial configuration is required.
You can download YPOPs! from Sourceforge.net.
Configuring Yahoo! Mail in Thunderbird
Begin by opening Account Settings through the Tools menu, then selecting "Account Settings". Click "Add Account" located in the lower-left corner.
Choose "Email Account" on the first screen and click Next. Then, input your name and Yahoo! email address on the Identity screen.
On the Server Information screen, enter "127.0.0.1" into the Incoming Server field and click Next. If an outgoing server isn't already configured, you’ll likely be prompted to add one; use the same IP address in this case.
Add your Yahoo! email address again in the User Names dialog, and then click next a few times and then Finish.
Setting Up Outgoing Email
If you wish to utilize Yahoo!'s email server for sending messages, select "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" in the left pane near the bottom, and then click Add.
Enter "127.0.0.1" into the Server Name field and your Yahoo email address in the User Name field. Ensure that "Use secure connection" is set to No.
To assign this outgoing server to your Yahoo account, select the account on the left-hand side and then change the drop-down menu labeled "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" to your newly added Yahoo server.
You should now be prepared to access your email. Click the "Get Mail" button, and you will be prompted to enter your Yahoo password.
Successfully configured, you can now access your Yahoo email within Thunderbird!
Additional Configuration Options
The YPOPs! utility’s configuration panel provides several advanced options. For example, the Download Folders screen allows you to retrieve email from custom folders.
The "Sending Email" screen includes a checkbox to store your outgoing email within the Yahoo sent items folder.
The "Miscellaneous" screen allows you to hide the tray icon, which can be beneficial for a cleaner desktop experience.
These instructions can be readily adapted for use with other email clients. However, if the security of your email account is paramount, it is advisable to avoid this method and consider switching to Gmail.
