Chrome Early Access: Get the Latest Releases

Accessing Early Chrome Releases

Do you desire to consistently utilize the most current iteration of Google Chrome on your system? It is now achievable through enrollment in the Early Access Release Channels. These release channels are segmented into distinct categories specifically for Windows operating systems.

Release Channels for Other Platforms

Currently, the Release Channels for Linux (both 32-bit and 64-bit) and macOS are limited to the Developer Preview option. Please be aware that the Linux version of Chrome is presently compatible only with Ubuntu or Debian distributions.

Subscribing to a Release Channel

Subscribe to an Early Access Release Channel to begin. For demonstration purposes, we will initiate the process using the latest stable version of Google Chrome (version 2.0.172.31). It’s worth noting that the error message “Update server not available (error: 3)” may appear if the Google automatic update service is not currently active.

While maintaining a current stable release is beneficial, exploring the latest features can be more engaging. Let's proceed with setting up and running the newest version!

The initial step involves navigating to the Early Access Release Channels homepage (link provided at the end of this article). There, you can review the available channels, along with detailed information about each and a recommendation to back up your user profile.

Choosing a Channel

Next, select a channel. In this example, we are using Vista SP2 and opting for the Dev Channel. The Dev Channel delivers the newest builds as soon as they become available.

Upon clicking the appropriate link, you will be directed to a page requesting acceptance of the “Google Chrome Terms of Service”. Click “Accept and Install” to continue.

Installation Process

After accepting the terms, two actions will occur simultaneously. First, a message will appear within your browser window.

Secondly, a download prompt will appear at the bottom left corner of your browser, asking for confirmation to download “ChromeSetup.exe”. Select “Save”.

Once the download is complete, double-click “ChromeSetup.exe” to initiate the installation. You will observe two windows during the installation process. Note that the existing Chrome instance may remain open throughout the installation without interruption, though you can choose to close it beforehand based on your preference.

Completing the Installation

Upon completion of the installation, a new instance of Google Chrome will automatically launch.

Checking the version number may initially display the original stable release version if the previous Chrome instance is still running.

Restarting Chrome will then reveal the updated version number. Congratulations! You are now running the newest available version of Chrome.

Background Process

It is important to understand that a new process, GoogleUpdate.exe, will run in the background each time your computer starts. Allowing this process to run continuously is essential for receiving the latest Chrome releases. Enjoy exploring the Developer Releases! Google Chrome Developer Channels
