Gemini App Experiences Rapid Growth Following Nano Banana Launch

Since the introduction of its Nano Banana image editor model in August, Gemini has witnessed a significant surge in mobile adoption. User feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many highlighting the enhanced ease with which they can now accomplish intricate edits and generate photorealistic images.

App Store Performance and Download Numbers

The Gemini application has quickly ascended to the leading positions in app stores worldwide. Appfigures, an app intelligence company, reports a 45% month-over-month increase in downloads throughout September.

To date, Gemini has already secured 12.6 million downloads this month, a substantial increase compared to the 8.7 million downloads recorded in August.

Prior to September, the app’s highest ranking on the U.S. App Store was No. 3, achieved on January 28, 2025.

Following the release of Nano Banana, Gemini swiftly climbed to the No. 2 position on the U.S. App Store on September 8th. Subsequently, it reached the No. 1 ranking on September 12th, a position it currently maintains, displacing OpenAI’s ChatGPT to No. 2.

Currently, no other applications solely dedicated to AI functionality feature within the App Store’s top 10.

Appfigures’ data also reveals that Gemini has become a top five iPhone application in 108 countries globally.

On the Google Play Store, Gemini experienced a notable jump in ranking. It moved from the No. 26 overall top app in the U.S. on September 8th to the No. 2 position as of Monday.

Despite Android being developed by Google, ChatGPT continues to hold the top spot on Google Play at the time of this report.

User Growth and Engagement

Google has emphasized Gemini’s expanding user base, driven by increased interest in its new image-editing capabilities. Josh Woodward, VP at Google Gemini and Google Labs, announced on X (formerly Twitter) on September 8th that the app had attracted 23 million new users since the Nano Banana model’s launch.

These new users have collectively shared over 500 million images.

Revenue Increases

The app’s rapid growth is also translating into increased revenue.

Gemini has generated $6.3 million in revenue on iOS devices this year, with $1.6 million coming from August, largely following the Nano Banana release. This represents a 1,291% increase from the $115,000 earned in January, according to Appfigures’ estimates.

The app is projected to either match or exceed August’s revenue in September, having already generated $792,000 this month – approximately half of August’s total.

Total Downloads and Historical Data

To date, Gemini’s application has been downloaded 103.7 million times this year. Since its initial launch on Android in February 2024 and subsequent expansion to iOS later in the same year, the app has accumulated a total of 185.4 million downloads.
