Assessing Computer Memory and Performance with PC Wizard 2008
We have discussed previously methods for identifying the type of memory installed in your computer, utilizing the Windows System Information tool. Today, we will introduce a utility that expands upon these capabilities, offering a more comprehensive feature set.
PC Wizard 2008 is a freeware application designed to analyze both your computer’s hardware and software components. Its standout feature lies in its ability to conduct basic performance benchmarks of key system elements, including the CPU, RAM, and hard drive.
Utilizing PC Wizard 2008
Let's explore some of the functionalities available within PC Wizard 2008. Upon launching the application – which may require a brief system analysis period – you'll be greeted by a user-friendly interface, with the hardware section prominently displayed.
The icons located on the left-hand side provide swift access to the various analytical sections.
PC Wizard functions as a collection of individual utilities integrated into a single application, allowing you to monitor nearly every aspect of your PC’s configuration.
Similar to System Information for Windows, PC Wizard incorporates a robust network monitoring tool capable of identifying most devices with active IP addresses on your network.
Beyond hardware, software, and network data, the application also includes a comprehensive Benchmarking tool, accessible through the Benchmark section of the left-hand menu.
This tool enables you to benchmark the CPU, RAM, Windows performance, overall system speed, L1 and L2 Cache, video capabilities, removable media, and even MP3 compression rates!
As illustrated above, PC Wizard presents benchmark results in an easily understandable graphical format. Detailed textual information is also available via the Information tab.
When running in the background, PC Wizard can display CPU data in a small onscreen display. This functions as a gadget, and can be positioned anywhere on the screen without requiring the Vista Sidebar.
The application offers a wide range of customizable settings to control its behavior during scans, monitoring, and benchmarks.
A system restart is required after making changes to the configuration, which is a minor inconvenience if you frequently adjust settings for testing purposes.
Given the extensive features included by CPUID in PC Wizard, one might anticipate a cost, but this utility is available completely free of charge. (though donations are appreciated)
Whether you are interested in assessing your PC’s performance, building a high-end gaming system, or engaging in overclocking, PC Wizard is a valuable free tool to have at your disposal.
