Recovering Windows Systems with the Ultimate Boot CD
Encountering boot failures, spyware infections, or viruses can be frustrating. While attempting repairs via the Windows CD is a common first step, it doesn't always resolve the issue. Although data backup is achievable with Ubuntu, a more comprehensive solution is the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows.
This recovery CD provides a wealth of software designed to repair or rectify nearly any problem affecting a Windows installation. Its foundation in Windows XP means many of the included tools will already be familiar to users.
It's important to understand that the installation process generates the ISO/CD image using your existing Windows XP installation files; a direct download of the boot CD isn't available.
Constructing the Ultimate Boot CD
The initial step involves downloading and installing the Ultimate Boot CD (UBCD4Win) software. This toolkit facilitates the creation of your customized CD version.
Upon launching UBCD4Win, you will be asked to locate the Windows XP installation files. You can decline this initial search and manually specify the source directory in the subsequent step.
In this instance, the Windows XP CD was inserted into the disc drive, and the D:\ drive was selected as the source. Within the Media output section, you have the option to directly burn the disc, however, creating an ISO image is generally preferred.
The Plugins button allows you to customize the features included on the boot CD. For this purpose, simply proceed by clicking the Build button, and allow time for the CD or ISO image to be generated.
Upon completion, an ISO file will be created in the designated location, typically around 640mb in size.
Numerous CD burning applications can be used to create the physical CD. ImgBurn (available via Ninite) is recommended for its simplicity and ease of use.
Utilizing the Ultimate Boot CD
With the CD now created, insert it into the drive and configure your system to boot from it. The boot options menu will appear, offering choices such as a memory test, access to the XP recovery console, or starting the ultimate boot CD directly by pressing Enter.
After booting (which may take some time), a desktop environment resembling Windows XP will be presented. However, this interface is powered by GeoShell, a streamlined shell replacement application.
A variety of useful utilities are pre-installed. For example, DriveImage XML enables the creation of complete hard drive backups.
Another tool, SelfImage, offers drive cloning capabilities with a few simple clicks, despite its less polished appearance.
Furthermore, a selection of Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware utilities are included, proving invaluable for addressing spyware infestations that hinder system startup.
Several MBR (Master Boot Record) fixing utilities are also available, assisting in resolving boot-related issues.
The CD contains many more tools than can be detailed here. Further articles will explore practical troubleshooting scenarios and other bootable disk options.
Please note: A copy of Windows XP is required to create the CD. However, the CD can also be used to repair certain aspects of a Vista installation.
