Pabio: A Sustainable Furniture Subscription Service Expands Across Europe

Conceptualizing Pabio as a “Stitchfix for furniture,” specifically within the European market, provides a fairly accurate understanding of the company’s core offering. Launched in Switzerland a few years ago, Pabio’s primary goal is to counter the trend of purchasing inexpensive, disposable furniture – often associated with brands like Ikea – for short-term living situations.

A New Approach to Interior Design and Furniture

Instead, Pabio focuses on delivering well-designed, durable, and environmentally conscious furniture solutions. The company recently announced its expansion into Germany and secured significant funding to bolster its marketing efforts and extend its reach to further European countries.

Pabio allows customers to receive a customized interior design proposal, complete with realistic visualizations of their furnished living space. Users simply upload their floor plan and provide photographs of the area.

From this information, Pabio generates a detailed 3D model showcasing the apartment and proposed furniture arrangement. Should the customer approve the design, they can then subscribe to receive the furniture, including delivery, installation, and insurance, for a fixed monthly fee.

The Inspiration Behind Pabio

“We observed that people wouldn’t choose an Airbnb if it resembled their own apartment’s aesthetic. This led us to explore the intersection of interior design and furniture,” explains Carlo Badini, co-founder and CEO of Pabio. “Our concept centers on combining interior design expertise with a furniture subscription model, making attractive living spaces accessible to renters with short-term leases.”

Sustainability and Long-Term Value

“While Ikea and the broader furniture industry often promote a perception of sustainability, a significant portion of furniture ends up not being recycled. The ‘fast furniture’ business model prioritizes sales volume and frequency,” states Anand Chowdhary, Pabio’s CTO. “Our approach is fundamentally different.

Because we operate on a subscription basis, we are incentivized to maximize the lifespan of our furniture within your home, which translates to offering high-quality pieces designed for decades of use.”

Furniture’s Historical Durability is a key inspiration. Chowdhary notes, “Furniture historically was built to last. Visiting your grandparents often reveals dining tables that are twenty years old or more. This was the standard before the rise of ‘fast furniture.’ We aim to revive that principle – furniture should be enduring.”

The Circular Economy in Action

“Upon the conclusion of a subscription, when a customer relocates, we reclaim all the furniture. We then refurbish these items and place them in new apartments,” Badini explains. “This process is optimized to quickly and affordably redeploy furniture.

After several cycles, when an item reaches the end of its useful life, we ensure it is properly recycled.”

Competitive Pricing and Target Market

The service’s pricing structure is designed to be competitive with traditional furniture purchases. A fully furnished one-bedroom apartment typically costs less than €200 (US$225) per month, and often falls below this amount.

“Our goal is to keep costs to a maximum of 15% of the customer’s monthly rent,” Chowdhary adds.

Investment and Future Growth

“The current economic climate is ideal for a rent-to-own company. Many millennials find it challenging to allocate tens of thousands of dollars upfront for apartment furnishings. Pabio provides a simple and affordable solution without sacrificing quality,” says Tim Brady, a partner at Y Combinator.

Currently, Pabio is providing its furniture rental services to approximately 100 homes. The company previously secured $1 million in pre-seed funding. This latest funding round adds $2.2 million, with participation from Serpentine Ventures, Session.VC, Tomahawk.VC, Pioneer Fund, and DD Venture Capital.
