OpenArt: AI Startup by Ex-Googlers Creates Viral 'Brain Rot' Videos

The Rise of AI-Generated "Brain Rot" Videos

A new trend involving AI-generated videos, often described as “brain rot,” is rapidly gaining popularity online. These short-form clips frequently showcase surreal and unconventional imagery, such as a shark sporting sneakers or a ballerina whose head is a cappuccino.

OpenArt: A Key Player in the Trend

Driving this phenomenon is OpenArt, a startup established in 2022 by two former Google employees. The platform currently reports approximately 6 million monthly active users.

Introducing the One-Click Story Feature

OpenArt has recently launched a new feature, currently in open beta, called “One-Click Story.” This tool empowers users to transform a single sentence, a complete script, or even song lyrics into a one-minute video complete with a narrative structure.

The applications are diverse, ranging from entertaining TikTok content to more substantive materials like explanatory videos or music videos for platforms like YouTube. OpenArt also anticipates potential use in the advertising sector.

Templates Available within One-Click Story

Users of the One-Click Story feature can select from three distinct templates: Character Vlog, Music Video, and Explainer. For a Character Vlog, users upload a character image and provide a descriptive prompt.

When a song is provided as input, the software analyzes the lyrics and generates an animation that visually represents the song’s themes, for example, depicting flowers blossoming in a garden.

Refining Videos and AI Model Options

The platform allows for detailed editing. Users can revisit the editor’s storyboard mode to adjust prompts and achieve a more polished final product.

OpenArt integrates over 50 different AI models, giving users the flexibility to choose the tools that best suit their needs, including DALLE-3, GPT, Imagen, Flux Kontext, and Stable Diffusion.

The primary objective of this new feature is to simplify the process of AI content creation, a field that continues to attract significant interest despite ongoing debates.

Ethical Considerations and Legal Risks

While these tools offer benefits – such as the rapid production of content with original characters and storylines – several ethical concerns must be addressed. These include potential imitation of artistic styles, questions surrounding intellectual property rights, and the risk of misuse for spreading misinformation.

Potential for Intellectual Property Infringement

Testing revealed that the Character Vlog option may present legal challenges. The availability of characters like Pikachu, SpongeBob, and Super Mario raises concerns about potential copyright infringement.

In June, Disney and Universal initiated legal action against AI firm Midjourney regarding AI-generated images.

Copyright Liability for Users

Users should be aware that videos found to violate copyright laws may be removed from social media platforms. Individuals contributing to such infringement could face legal repercussions from the copyright holder.

OpenArt’s Response to IP Concerns

“We strive to be careful regarding IP infringement,” stated Coco Mao, co-founder and CEO, in an interview with TechCrunch. “Our models generally reject uploads of protected characters, though occasionally these restrictions are bypassed.”

Mao also indicated the company is willing to explore licensing agreements with major intellectual property owners.

OpenArt emphasizes its ability to maintain consistent character representation as a key differentiator. Unlike many video models that rely on disjointed clips, OpenArt aims for visual and narrative coherence.

“A common challenge for AI has been maintaining character consistency throughout a video,” Mao explained. “Without a consistent character, it’s difficult for viewers to become fully engaged with the story.”

Future Plans for OpenArt

The company intends to expand the one-click feature to allow for video creation featuring conversations between two distinct characters. Development of a dedicated mobile application is also planned.

Pricing and Subscription Plans

OpenArt utilizes a credit-based system. Four subscription tiers are available, starting with a basic plan at $14 per month for 4,000 credits, which includes up to four One-Click stories, 40 videos, 4,000 images, and four characters.

The advanced plan costs $30 monthly for 12,000 credits and allows for up to 12 One-Click stories. An Infinite plan is offered at $56 per month for 24,000 credits, and a team plan is available at $35 per member, per month.

Financial Performance and Funding

To date, OpenArt has secured $5 million in funding from Basis Set Ventures and DCM Ventures. The company reports positive cash flow and projects an annual revenue rate exceeding $20 million.
