Flat6Labs Closes $10M Seed Fund for Tunisian Startups

Flat6Labs Secures $10 Million for Tunisian Startup Seed Fund

Flat6Labs, a regional seed and early-stage venture capital firm, has successfully completed the raising of $10 million for its seed fund. This fund is specifically designed to support startups located in Tunisia, as detailed in a recent company statement.

Fund Performance and Regional Investment Trends

Initially aiming for a $3 million close, the Anava Seed Fund (ASF) ultimately secured 3.3 times that amount. This outcome demonstrates a significant increase in investment activity directed towards early-stage companies across Africa, with a particular focus on those in North Africa.

In May, Flat6Labs also finalized the closing of its Egypt-based fund, the Flat6Labs Accelerator Company fund (FAC), at $13 million.

Fund Origins and Partnerships

Flat6Labs was established in 2011, with initial operations in Egypt and Tunisia. The Cairo program was launched concurrently with the ASF in 2017.

The ASF was created through a collaborative effort involving the Tunisian American Enterprise Fund, BIAT Bank, and Meninx Holding. The original plan involved investing in up to 90 Tunisian early-stage startups over a five-year period.

Investment Portfolio and Impact

To date, the Anava Seed Fund has made investments in over 50 startups, spanning seed, follow-on, and pre-Series A funding stages.

Ramez El-Serafy, CEO of Flat6Labs, stated that the completion of the ASF fund represents a positive step towards unlocking the considerable, yet untapped, potential and business opportunities within North African markets.

He further expressed his satisfaction with the growing investor confidence in the region, noting increased commitments to both the FAC Egypt Fund and the Anava Seed Fund. El-Serafy anticipates expanding their impact throughout North Africa with continued support from investors and partners.

Key Investor: Sawari Ventures

Sawari Ventures, a long-term partner of the accelerator, is a significant investor in the ASF. The MENA-focused venture capital firm recently closed a $71 million fund – one of the largest indigenous funds in the region and across Africa.

Sawari Ventures allocated $1.6 million to the ASF and has also earmarked one-tenth of its fund for Flat6Labs seed-stage companies operating in both Egypt and Tunisia.

Overall Investment and Follow-on Funding

Across North Africa, Flat6Labs has provided backing to numerous startups, deploying over $10.5 million through its seed funds. These startups have subsequently secured more than $37 million in subsequent funding rounds.

Broader Funding Landscape in North Africa

While several funds have been established this year to support North African startups, there's also a growing trend towards micro-funds. Alongside the successes of Flat6Labs, Sawari Ventures, and Algebra Ventures, GIZ Egypt launched a €100 million funding program in May. This program is intended for fund managers based in the MENA region.

This demonstrates a comprehensive approach to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship within the North African ecosystem.
