Fitbit App Update: Gemini-Powered Health Coach for Premium Users

Fitbit's Gemini-Powered Health Coach: Public Preview Begins

The rollout of Fitbit’s new health coach, powered by Gemini, commences as a public preview for Premium subscribers in the U.S. on Android devices, starting tomorrow. Expansion to iOS platforms is scheduled for later this year.

Leveraging Gemini AI for Enhanced Fitness

As competition within the AI landscape intensifies, Google is positioning the Gemini AI assistant as a key differentiator for Fitbit. This feature, known as “Coach,” is intended to function as a comprehensive resource for fitness training, sleep guidance, and overall health and wellness support.

Google recently demonstrated Coach’s capabilities at the Made by Google event, highlighting its ability to generate personalized routines based on individual goals, preferences, and available exercise equipment.

Personalized Fitness Plans and Real-Time Adjustments

For instance, if a user aims to increase running endurance, Coach will devise a customized fitness plan complete with targeted suggestions and attainable objectives.

During workouts, the plan dynamically adjusts based on user feedback, ensuring continued progress. Should an injury occur, the AI will intelligently modify the plan to accommodate recovery.

Sleep Analysis and Improvement

Beyond fitness, Coach also analyzes sleep patterns and delivers actionable insights to improve sleep quality over time.

A Revamped Fitbit App Experience

Alongside Coach, the Fitbit app itself has undergone a redesign, featuring a streamlined interface and improved navigation. The app is now organized around four primary tabs: Today, Fitness, Sleep, and Health.

A demonstration video detailing each tab is available on Google’s Made by Google YouTube channel.

Exploring the New App Tabs

The Today tab serves as a central dashboard, displaying key metrics, weekly cardio load data, and other relevant statistics for quick review. Users can personalize the displayed metrics to suit their individual needs.

The Fitness tab consolidates workout plans and essential metrics, such as cardio goals and average weekly step counts. It’s important to note that certain features, including nutrition tracking and cycle logging, are currently unavailable.

Detailed Sleep Tracking and AI Insights

The Sleep tab facilitates sleep pattern tracking, incorporating a new feature that provides AI Coach insights to enhance sleep quality. A comprehensive Sleep summary, detailing information from the previous night’s sleep – including periods of wakefulness – is also available.

Comprehensive Health Metrics

The Health tab provides quick access to vital signs, including breathing rate, blood oxygen saturation, and resting heart rate, offering a holistic overview of the user’s health status.

Accessing the Coach Preview

To participate in the Coach preview on Android, users require an active Fitbit Premium subscription and a compatible Fitbit smartwatch, tracker, or Pixel Watch.
