Firefly Acquires SciTec for $855M to Boost Defense Capabilities

Firefly Aerospace to Acquire SciTec for $855 Million
Firefly Aerospace announced on Sunday an agreement to purchase defense analytics company SciTec for approximately $855 million. This acquisition, structured as a combination of cash and stock, represents a key step in Firefly’s strategy to establish a strong presence within the national security sector.
Deal Details and Financials
The transaction will involve a payment of roughly $300 million in cash, supplemented by $555 million in newly issued shares of Firefly Aerospace stock. Completion of the acquisition is currently anticipated by the close of 2025.
SciTec's Capabilities and Recent Contracts
SciTec, headquartered in Princeton, specializes in the development and sale of critical defense technologies. These include missile-warning and tracking systems, tools for space domain awareness, and advanced analytics solutions tailored for defense and intelligence agencies.
Notably, the U.S. Space Force recently awarded SciTec a substantial $259 million contract. This contract is for the development of a ground-based system designed to support missile-detection satellites. The company’s annual revenue reached $164 million as of the end of June.
Strategic Implications for Firefly Aerospace
This acquisition follows Firefly’s initial public offering (IPO) from earlier in the year, which resulted in a valuation of nearly $10 billion. The move signifies a deliberate effort by Firefly to evolve from a traditional launch and spacecraft manufacturer into a fully integrated defense contractor.
Integrating SciTec’s expertise will be particularly advantageous. This is especially true as the Department of Defense actively seeks partnerships with commercial entities for enhanced missile tracking and early-warning capabilities, including initiatives like the “Golden Dome” missile-defense program.
Leadership and Operational Structure
Following the finalization of the acquisition, SciTec will function as a subsidiary of Firefly Aerospace. Jim Lisowski, the current CEO of SciTec, will continue to lead the company in its new capacity.
SciTec’s technologies will significantly bolster Firefly’s offerings to the defense sector. Missile detection systems are becoming increasingly vital for national security. Space domain awareness is also a critical component of modern defense strategies.
