Figma Expands to India: A New Market for Design

Figma Strengthens its Indian Presence to Engage Developers

Figma is strategically expanding its operations within India through the establishment of a new local office and focused recruitment efforts. This move aims to cultivate stronger relationships with its substantial Indian user base and broaden its appeal to developers, extending beyond its current designer-centric user profile.

Origins and Growth of Figma

Established in 2012 by Dylan Field and Evan Wallace, Figma gained prominence by introducing a browser-based design interface. This innovation challenged the prevailing reliance on traditional desktop software. Initially facing some doubt, the platform rapidly evolved into a leading collaborative tool for UX and product development teams.

India: A Key Market for Developer Engagement

The company now intends to replicate this success with developers, identifying India as a crucial market to facilitate this transition. India boasts one of the world’s largest developer communities – a resource already recognized by major technology companies like Microsoft, which supports approximately 22 million Indian developers on GitHub.

Developer Usage and Perception Challenges

Currently, around 33% of Figma’s global users are developers. Figma has been actively releasing features designed to streamline the connection between design and engineering workflows. However, a challenge remains: many Indian developers still perceive Figma primarily as a design instrument, rather than a comprehensive platform for complete product development.

Figma's Strategy for India

“A significant number of developers in India may not currently consider Figma as a primary tool, and we aim to change that perception,” stated Abhishek Mathur, VP of Engineering at Figma. “While community-driven initiatives are valuable, we want to actively participate and showcase how Figma empowers developers beyond code writing.”

New Bengaluru Office and Global Expansion

On Wednesday, Figma inaugurated a new office in Bengaluru, India, as part of its broader international expansion. The company, headquartered in San Francisco, already maintains offices in key global locations including Tokyo, Singapore, London, Paris, Berlin, Sydney, and São Paulo.

Transition from Remote Support to Local Presence

Previously, Figma had been supporting its Indian users remotely through its Singapore-based team. Recognizing the increasing importance of the Indian market, the company determined that establishing a local presence was essential to support its growing user base and community engagement.

India's Role in Figma's International Strategy

“India is a significant global center for innovation, and international markets are vital to Figma’s overall usage,” Mathur explained to TechCrunch.

Usage Statistics and Market Share

Approximately 85% of Figma’s total usage originates from international markets, with India representing its second-largest user base after the United States. As of the third quarter of 2025, Figma served users in 85% of India’s 28 states. Furthermore, over 40% of the companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange were Figma customers as of September.

Figma currently has 13 million weekly active users globally. While specific user numbers for India haven’t been disclosed, Mathur characterized the country as “a very substantial portion” of its overall user base. The Friends of Figma community in India alone comprises more than 25,000 members.

AI-Powered Features and Competitive Landscape

In May, Figma launched a suite of new AI-powered features designed to broaden the software’s utility beyond design teams. This positions Figma as a competitor not only to Adobe and Canva, but also to AI coding platforms like Replit and Lovable. Figma Make, one such feature, enables users to generate functional web applications from natural language prompts, facilitating collaboration on both design and code within a unified workspace.

Figma Make Adoption in India

Mathur revealed that India has been the largest market for Figma Make, with users in the country having generated over 800,000 prototypes to date.

Dev Mode Adoption and Usage Patterns

Figma has also observed growing adoption of its dev mode among Indian developers, which was introduced in 2023 to expedite the translation of designs into code.

Unique Indian Usage Characteristics

“We are witnessing a unique progression from initial concept to production in India compared to other regions,” Mathur noted. “Usage patterns are comparable, but the scale of certain operations presents significant challenges.”

Focus of the Bengaluru Office

The Bengaluru office will initially concentrate on bolstering Figma’s sales and marketing operations within the country. Key Indian users include consumer-focused startups like CRED, Groww, Fynd, Swiggy, and Zomato, alongside IT service providers such as Infosys and TCS, and consumer companies like Airtel, CARS24, and Myntra.

Revenue Contribution and Product Development Influence

In 2024, approximately half of Figma’s revenue was generated from markets outside the U.S., with India identified as an “important market” for the company. However, the specific contribution of India to global revenue was not disclosed. Importantly, feedback from the Indian user community has directly influenced Figma’s product development, leading to the introduction of enhanced code-export options that produce higher-quality code.

Future Plans for India

“We are committed to continuing events, engaging with our customers – both large and small – and exploring additional opportunities as time progresses,” Mathur concluded.
