Fetch Robotics' New Warehouse Robot Replaces Forklifts

Fetch, a robotics firm located in San Jose, introduced its newest robot today. The PalletTransport1500 is a self-operating machine created to take the place of forklifts within warehouse environments. These systems, engineered to lift and transport pallets, can handle loads weighing as much as 2,504 pounds.

This new offering expands the range of robotic forklift options available from several manufacturers, including Toyota. However, the pallet-moving robots developed by Amazon’s Kiva Systems remain among the most recognized in the industry.

The system’s development incorporated Honeywell Intelligrated’s Momentum warehouse software. Fetch currently provides a variety of robotic solutions for warehouses, establishing a comprehensive autonomous system. The company’s offerings are recognized for their adaptability compared to other large-scale solutions.

According to a press statement, the robot’s purpose is to eliminate the need for human operators in pallet movement. Its functions include:

Demand for this type of product was likely substantial, considering the frequent incidence of accidents involving forklifts. Data from OSHA indicates that “forklifts are responsible for approximately 85 fatal accidents annually; 34,900 accidents result in serious injuries; and 61,800 are categorized as non-serious.” This represents a significant proportion of workplace accidents. The agency further notes that, assuming one accident per machine, around 11% of forklifts in the U.S. are involved in an accident each year.

Beyond these safety issues, the disruptions caused by COVID-19 have likely accelerated the adoption of automated fulfillment systems in the last year.
