Facebook Passkeys: Enhanced Security Coming to Android & iOS

Facebook Implements Passkey Support for Enhanced Security

Facebook has announced the implementation of passkey support for users on both iOS and Android platforms, as of Wednesday.

This new login method significantly improves account security by making remote account access more difficult for malicious actors. Passkeys necessitate physical access to the user’s device for verification.

How Passkeys Enhance Security

Unlike traditional username and password logins, passkeys utilize biometric authentication such as Face ID or Touch ID, a personal identification number (PIN), or a dedicated physical security key to confirm user identity.

The adoption of passkeys eliminates the vulnerabilities associated with relying on username and password combinations, which are often targeted by phishing attacks and other security breaches.

facebook will soon roll out support for passkeys on android and iosExpanding Passkey Functionality

Facebook has indicated that passkey functionality will soon be extended to Messenger in the coming months. Users will then have the convenience of utilizing the same passkey across both services.

Furthermore, passkeys can streamline the checkout process by automatically filling in payment details when making purchases through Meta Pay.

Setting Up Passkeys

Users can initiate passkey setup by navigating to the new “passkey” option within the Accounts Center, accessible through the Settings menu on Facebook.

Once configured, the passkey can be used for logging into Facebook on a smartphone. Existing authentication methods, like passwords, will remain available for compatibility with devices that do not yet support passkeys.

Industry-Wide Adoption of Passkeys

Facebook joins a growing list of technology companies embracing passkey technology. Other prominent companies that have integrated passkey support include:

  • Apple
  • Microsoft
  • Amazon
  • Google
  • PayPal
  • TikTok
  • WhatsApp
  • X (formerly Twitter)
  • GitHub

This widespread adoption reflects a collective effort to enhance online security and provide users with more secure authentication options.
