Facebook Mandates Employee COVID-19 Vaccination for Return to Office

Tech Giants Mandate Vaccinations for Office Return

Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed today that employee vaccination will be mandatory prior to resuming on-site work. This announcement was included within a broader communication to Google/Alphabet personnel.

The letter also detailed an extension of the company’s work-from-home policy, now continuing until October 18th. This decision reflects ongoing concerns regarding the spread of the COVID-19 delta variant globally.

Facebook Follows Suit with Vaccination Requirement

Facebook’s VP of People, Lori Goler, has confirmed a comparable policy for the social media company in a statement to TechCrunch.

Goler stated that vaccination will be required for anyone accessing Facebook’s U.S. campuses. Implementation details will be adjusted based on local regulations and conditions.

A process will be established to accommodate individuals with legitimate medical exemptions or other protected reasons. Facebook will also continue to assess the situation and adapt its approach in different regions.

Similarities to Google’s Policy

The wording of Facebook’s announcement closely mirrors Pichai’s letter, which also included provisions for medical or legally protected exemptions.

However, the statement does not currently provide a revised timeline for the return to the office. Initial plans had aimed for 50% capacity in September, progressing to full capacity by October.

Amazon Encourages, But Doesn't Require, Vaccination

Amazon has responded to inquiries by stating they “strongly encourage” employees and contractors to get vaccinated when eligible.

Currently, Amazon’s guidelines do not mandate vaccination for returning to offices. However, unvaccinated employees are required to wear face masks.

Fully vaccinated individuals are not required to wear face coverings. This provides a degree of flexibility based on vaccination status.

Flexibility and Regional Considerations

Both Google and Facebook’s policies allow for flexibility, taking into account local and state regulations, medical considerations, and vaccine accessibility.

Access to vaccines can vary significantly depending on geographic location, influencing the practical application of these mandates.

Last week, a Wall Street Journal report indicated that Amazon believes vaccines are highly effective against COVID-19 variants, including the delta variant, and that their office reopening timelines remained unchanged.
