Facebook Tests Topic Targeting for In-Stream Video Ads

Facebook Enhances Video Advertising Capabilities
Facebook is unveiling new features designed for video advertisers utilizing both the Facebook and Instagram platforms. These updates are accompanied by fresh data regarding the potential reach of these advertising efforts.
Expanding Audience Reach and Ad Completion Rates
The company reports that 2 billion individuals now engage with videos monthly that qualify for in-stream ads. A significant 70% of these in-stream advertisements are viewed in their entirety.
Studies conducted by Facebook demonstrate that incorporating an In-Stream campaign alongside existing News Feed and Stories advertising purchases results in a median 1.5x increase in ad recall.
Addressing Past Metric Concerns
During a discussion with Carolyn Everson, Facebook’s vice president of global business, questions arose regarding the comfort level of traditional advertisers with the company’s reported metrics.
It’s important to remember that in 2016, Facebook acknowledged an error that led to inflated video view times, and continues to face scrutiny over its handling of the situation.
Commitment to Accurate Measurement
Everson affirmed Facebook’s commitment to providing “very specific” data. She emphasized that in-stream ads are exclusively placed within videos exceeding three minutes in length.
Furthermore, an advertisement will only commence playback after a viewer has observed at least 45 seconds of the video, or a longer duration depending on the content.
“We are going to be very competitive and consistent with the marketplace,” Everson stated. “Measurement methodologies vary, but these figures will undoubtedly be well-received.”
Introducing In-Stream Video Topics
Facebook is initiating a global test of In-Stream Video Topics. This new functionality will empower advertisers to target advertisements based not only on audience demographics, but also on the subject matter of the video itself.
According to a Facebook blog post, the initial rollout will encompass “over 20 Video Topics, like Sports,” and more than 700 associated sub-topics, including Baseball, Basketball, Golf, and Swimming.
Leveraging Machine Learning for Safety and Classification
The company will employ machine learning technology to categorize eligible videos and ensure adherence to Facebook’s brand safety guidelines.
Expanding Ads to Instagram Reels
Facebook is also beginning tests of advertisements within its short-form Instagram Reels format. Initial testing will occur in India, Brazil, Germany, and Australia.
These advertisements can be up to 30 seconds long, and users will be able to interact with them similarly to organic Reels content – through likes, shares, and skips.
Testing Sticker Ads for Facebook Stories
The previously announced sticker ads are now entering a testing phase. This feature allows brands to design custom stickers for inclusion in Facebook Stories by content creators.
A Decade of Progress in Online Video Solutions
Reflecting on these announcements, Everson, who joined Facebook in 2011, expressed her enthusiasm. “For the last 10 years, I’ve been anticipating the moment when we are fully prepared to discuss online video solutions for marketers.”
She concluded, “With today’s announcements, we have definitively arrived.”
