Facebook's Evolving Hardware Initiatives

The outward appearance of Facebook’s approach to hardware development is often difficult to decipher. The company has achieved considerable success with Oculus sales, particularly during the increased demand brought on by the pandemic. Furthermore, its Portal device, a competitor to the Echo Show, has experienced a rise in popularity as individuals have been required to maintain social distancing.

However, a smartphone collaboration with HTC, undertaken approximately eight years ago, did not yield the desired results.

Development of a Smartwatch

Reports emerged earlier this year indicating that Facebook was developing a smartwatch intended to rival the Apple Watch. This wearable was projected to prioritize health-related features and operate on an open-source iteration of Android.

Such a device would represent a distinct alternative to Google’s wearOS platform.

A New Wrist-Based Wearable

This week, Facebook showcased another wearable device designed for the wrist. The details of this new project don’t entirely align with previous reports, suggesting the possibility of two separate, concurrent initiatives. Given Facebook’s size, multiple projects are certainly plausible.

This particular endeavor, originating from Facebook Reality Labs, is geared towards providing a novel computer interface. It appears closely linked to the company’s ongoing augmented reality (AR) efforts.

Conceptual Interface and Future AR Integration

Based on the information released, this project appears to be largely conceptual at this stage. It could potentially serve as a crucial component for enabling more intuitive control within a future augmented reality system.

Even in its current form, it is presented as a stepping stone toward a more comprehensive and integrated human-computer interaction solution. The extent to which individuals will embrace deeper integration with Facebook at a neurological level is a question that will likely need to be addressed soon.

Utilizing Electromyography (EMG) Sensors

The interface is specifically engineered to employ electromyography (EMG) sensors. These sensors interpret signals from motor nerves, allowing users to interact with the interface based on their intended movements.

This topic was discussed during a recent Clubhouse event featuring Mark Zuckerberg. Following a conversation with Eric Migicovsky, the founder of Pebble and a partner at YC, regarding his experiences with Apple and his smartwatch startup, the Facebook CEO stated:

“Exploring” appears to be a key term in this context. Nevertheless, it remains compelling and intriguing to observe these projects in their initial phases of development. Even if the projected capabilities currently seem somewhat ambitious.

The Potential of EMG in Augmented Reality

EMG technology is expected to evolve, leading to more sophisticated control mechanisms. Within augmented reality environments, users will be able to interact with and manipulate virtual user interfaces and objects directly, as demonstrated in a recent demo video.

Furthermore, it will enable control of virtual objects from a distance, effectively granting users a capability akin to the fictional “Force.”
