Facebook Messenger & Instagram: New Cross-App Group Chats

New Features Roll Out for Facebook Messenger
A series of new features are being launched within Facebook Messenger today, with a primary focus on enhanced connectivity. Notably, this includes the introduction of group chats that span both the Messenger and Instagram applications.
Previously, cross-app messaging was enabled between Messenger and Instagram last year. Now, users gain the ability to initiate group conversations encompassing contacts from both platforms.
Expanded Functionality
Further enhancements are also being implemented. Instagram Direct Messages will now support polls, extending a feature already available in Messenger.
A group typing indicator is being added to group conversations, functioning across both apps. This allows users to see in real-time when fellow participants are composing messages.
With Instagram’s increasing emphasis on video, Messenger’s Watch Together feature will now be compatible with Instagram content. Users can simultaneously view Reels and IGTV videos.
Strategic Timing and Legal Context
These updates arrive shortly before Facebook is scheduled to appear before the Senate to address concerns regarding the potential mental health impacts of Instagram and Facebook.
However, the rollout is also linked to an ongoing government investigation into Facebook’s business practices. The company is currently involved in a lawsuit brought by the Federal Trade Commission.
The FTC alleges that Facebook operates as a monopoly and should be divided. Increased interdependence between Facebook’s products could be used to argue against such a separation.
A Facebook representative recently described Messenger as “connective tissue regardless of the surface,” highlighting the company’s vision for its interconnected ecosystem.
Customization Options
Beyond the core integration features, Messenger is introducing several customization options. A new cottagecore chat theme is available.
Additionally, a suite of astrology-themed chat themes, stickers, and Instagram AR filters have been added for users interested in personalization.
These additions provide users with more ways to express themselves within the messaging platform.
