Facebook Messenger Tests Split Payments in the US

Facebook Messenger Introduces Split Payments
Facebook Messenger has announced the commencement of testing for a new Split Payments feature. This functionality allows users to conveniently share expenses and bills directly within the application.
The company emphasizes that this new tool provides a “free and fast” method for managing personal finances through Messenger. Initial rollout of the feature is scheduled to begin next week for users located in the United States.
How to Utilize Split Payments
To access Split Payments, users will initiate the process by selecting the “Get Started” button. This can be done either within a group conversation or through the Payments Hub in Messenger.
Users can then choose to divide a bill equally among all participants. Alternatively, they have the flexibility to customize the contribution amount for each individual within the group. This adjustment can be made with or without including the initiator’s own share.
A personalized message can also be added to the payment request. Finally, users will be prompted to verify their Facebook Pay information before the request is submitted and becomes visible within the group chat.
According to a company blog post, this feature aims to simplify the process of dividing and receiving reimbursements for shared costs, such as group meals, household bills, or even monthly rent.
Recent Payment Feature Additions
The introduction of Split Payments follows the recent implementation of Venmo-style QR codes for peer-to-peer transactions. These codes were launched in the U.S. several months ago.
These QR codes enable users to send or request funds via Facebook Pay, regardless of whether they are connected as Facebook friends. Access to this functionality is available within the “Facebook Pay” section of Messenger’s settings.
Facebook Pay was initially launched in November 2019. It was designed to create a unified payment system across the company’s various applications.
This system supports not only person-to-person payments but also other transactions like charitable donations and online purchases.
Additional Messenger Updates
Alongside Split Payments, several other updates have been introduced to Messenger. These include four new augmented reality (AR) effects for group chats, created in collaboration with prominent content creators: Emma Chamberlain, Zach King, Bella Poarch, and King Bach.
Furthermore, two new “Stranger Things” Soudmojis have been added. These are animated emojis that play a sound when sent within a Messenger conversation.
A new chat theme has also been released, and a special Taylor Swift Soudmoji was recently launched to coincide with the release of her album “Red.”
