Facebook Messenger AR Experiences for Group Video Calls

Facebook Messenger Enhances Video Calls with Augmented Reality
Facebook Messenger is introducing new augmented reality (AR) features to both video calls and Messenger Rooms, its integrated videoconferencing solution.
The company anticipates extending these new “Group Effects” to Instagram in the near future.
Shared AR Experiences with Group Effects
These Group Effects are designed to function for all participants in a video call, fostering a collaborative AR experience.
Users now have access to a library containing over 70 different group effects.
These include interactive games, such as one challenging participants to construct the most impressive burger in the quickest time.
Accessing and Utilizing Group Effects
To explore the new Group Effects, initiate a video call or establish a new room.
Tap the smiley face icon to reveal the effects tray, then select the “group effects” option.
From this menu, you can choose an AR experience that will be applied to everyone involved in the call.
Expanding Creator Capabilities
Facebook is also broadening access to its Spark AR API later this month.
This expansion will empower more creators and developers to design and implement group effects.
“Group Effects offer a more captivating and interactive method for connecting with friends.
They also bolster the creator community and provide expanded avenues for self-expression,” stated the company in a recent blog post.
New Word Effects and Soundmojis
Facebook Messenger is also deploying new “suggested word effects” that initiate animations within the chat interface.
For example, sending messages like “goodnight” or “congrats” will now prompt an option to generate a corresponding word effect.
Initially launched in August for holidays and personal jokes, word effects are now being broadened to encompass common phrases.
These suggested word effects are currently available to all iOS users and will be rolled out to Android devices in the coming weeks.
Themed Experiences and Halloween Updates
In conjunction with the release of “No Time to Die,” Facebook Messenger is introducing new James Bond “soundmojis.”
New chat themes are also being launched, including a “care” theme and a selection of spooky Halloween themes.
Four new haunted world AR effects will also be available within Facebook Messenger in time for Halloween.
Metaverse Integration
The introduction of Group AR in Messenger aligns with the company’s broader focus on “metaverse” initiatives.
This development is consistent with the goal of creating shared, immersive virtual experiences.
