While the presidential election outcome has been determined, national divisions remain prominent.

Prior to the U.S. election date, Facebook temporarily suspended all advertising related to political topics and social issues. The company stated at the time that this preventative step, intended to limit the spread of inaccurate information, would be short-lived, though a specific timeframe for lifting the restriction was not provided.

Facebook has now announced that this temporary suspension will be prolonged for at least an additional month. This decision to maintain the policy was made on Wednesday, four days following Joe Biden’s election win—and four days after it became apparent that President Trump did not intend to acknowledge the loss.

“The temporary suspension of advertisements concerning politics and social issues within the United States remains active as part of our continuing work to safeguard the election process,” the company communicated in an update to its initial statement. “Advertisers should anticipate this lasting for another month, although the possibility exists for these advertisements to be reinstated before that time.”

Rob Leathern of Facebook provided further explanation for the decision through a series of posts on Twitter. “We understand that many are frustrated by our inability to immediately allow advertisements for runoff elections in Georgia and other locations,” Leathern stated, adding that the special election precautions will remain until the results are officially confirmed.

Facebook’s continued pause on political advertising creates complications in Georgia, where two runoff elections in January will determine which party controls the Senate as President-Elect Biden begins his term. A Senate aligned with Biden’s party is crucial for the advancement of many of his key initiatives, including a $2 trillion plan to address climate change that could significantly alter the American economy and steer the nation towards a future powered by electricity rather than fossil fuels.

In recent days, a considerable number of Republicans have supported the president’s unwillingness to concede the election, despite a clear declaration of the results and Biden’s conclusive victory in Pennsylvania, which eliminated any remaining avenues for his opponent to win. The Trump campaign’s numerous legal challenges have, to date, lacked substantial merit and may be primarily focused on creating division and uncertainty rather than achieving success in the courts.
