ForSight Robotics Secures $10 Million in Mega-Seed Funding

ForSight Robotics, a company headquartered in Israel, has recently announced the successful completion of a $10 million funding round. This substantial investment, categorized as a “mega-seed round,” was spearheaded by Eclipse Ventures and Mithril Capital.

The acquired capital will be strategically allocated to bolster the company’s team and broaden its international presence. Expansion into new global markets is a key objective, contingent upon securing the necessary regulatory clearances for a robotic surgery platform.

Addressing the Global Disparity in Ophthalmic Surgical Access

ForSight’s innovative surgical platform is meticulously engineered for ophthalmological surgeries – procedures demanding exceptional accuracy. Demand for such specialized surgery is significant worldwide.

A recent study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology highlights a stark contrast in access to qualified eye surgeons. Developed nations benefit from approximately 72 surgeons per million people, while developing countries have a significantly lower ratio of just 3.7 surgeons per million.

Technology and Vision for Democratizing Surgery

“Our core strength lies in a unique, internally developed technology,” explains Daniel Glozman, co-founder and CEO of ForSight Robotics, in an interview with TechCrunch. “This technology integrates robotics, advanced visualization techniques, and machine learning capabilities.”

The combined effect of these technologies, according to Glozman, will empower physicians to broaden access to surgical procedures. It aims to enable consistent, high-quality ophthalmic procedures globally, regardless of a surgeon’s location or experience level.

Strong Advisory Board and Investor Confidence

ForSight Robotics boasts a remarkable foundation for a company in its early stages. The company’s strategic advisory board includes Dr. Fred Moll, a co-founder of both Intuitive Surgical and Auris Health.

Further strengthening the advisory team are Rony Abovitz of Mako Surgical and Ajay Royan of Mithril. A team of six experienced ophthalmic surgeons also contribute their clinical expertise to the advisory board.

Investment Trends and Future Goals

The medical and surgical technology sector has attracted considerable venture capital investment, particularly at the seed stage. Approximately a quarter of total funding in 2019 was directed towards seed-stage companies, with an estimated 600-700 companies receiving funding.

ForSight Robotics appears well-positioned to capitalize on this trend, given its strong pedigree and growing interest from investors. The company’s ultimate goal is to make its technology accessible across diverse markets, thereby promoting equitable access to high-quality eye surgery.
