Addressing the Firefox Bookmark Dialog Issue

Many Firefox users find it frustrating that the bookmark dialog doesn't automatically display the folder list. Each time a bookmark is added, the expand button must be clicked to reveal the desired folder location. Fortunately, there are two readily available solutions to modify this behavior. These involve either a browser extension or a user style script.

Utilizing the OpenBook Extension

One method to automatically expand the Firefox bookmark dialog is through the OpenBook extension. Download and install this extension directly from Mozilla Add-ons. After a Firefox restart, the bookmark dialog will consistently open with the folder list visible.

The OpenBook extension also provides a range of additional, helpful options accessible through its extensive options window.

A particularly useful feature allows you to configure Firefox to automatically save bookmarks into a pre-selected folder by utilizing the "Add bookmark to folder below" setting.

Employing the Stylish Tweak

For those who prefer the Stylish extension, a user style can be implemented as an alternative to installing a separate extension. While this approach doesn't offer the same breadth of features, it can help minimize extension bloat. Simply install the "Add Bookmark Dialog" user style.

Following installation, the default bookmark dialog will be altered to display the folder list automatically. The script allows for customization of the dialog's width and height, a feature not available within the OpenBook extension.

Disabling the Stylish User Style

Because this user style modifies the user interface, it isn't visible in the standard Stylish popup. To disable it, navigate to the Manage Styles section within Stylish.

Locate the "Add Bookmark Dialog" style in the list and remove the checkmark to the left of its name.

Finally, remember that a quick and simple alternative is to drag bookmarks directly from the address bar onto the bookmarks bar.
