Vreel: Exclusive Interview with the Founder - VR Platform

A New Platform for Online Video: Introducing Vreel.net
For those disappointed by the closure of Stage6, a new option is on the horizon with the upcoming launch of Vreel.net. Essentially, Vreel is positioned as the successor to Stage6.
Initially known as DivXIT.net – a domain that still redirects to Vreel – the site quickly attracted a substantial user base. This growth prompted a cease and desist notice from DivX Inc. regarding copyright concerns.
Subsequently, the site’s staff transferred the domain name to DivX in exchange for a license to utilize their technology.
DivX Codec and Web Player Integration
Vreel has secured a license from DivX, enabling the use of their codec. This integration unlocks a range of advanced web player capabilities. Having had the opportunity to participate in a closed beta review, the platform’s potential is quite promising.
The site’s design is visually appealing and offers a comfortable user experience for video viewing. The category structure includes a dedicated Anime section, alongside content focused on Japanese culture.
Accessing the site requires installation of the DivX Web Player, which has functioned flawlessly with all videos tested. A particularly useful feature is the Windowed Mode, allowing videos to be displayed independently on the desktop.
Interview with Vreel Founder, Eoin
An interview was conducted with Eoin, the founder of Vreel, providing insights into the platform’s future.
Mysticgeek: What is your overall vision for Vreel, both in its current state and for the years to come?
Eoin: Vreel is currently in its early stages of development, with our team diligently working to ensure a smooth launch. The closed beta phase has revealed the significant potential for growth, exceeding initial expectations. Our projections from May now appear conservative, as current traffic already surpasses those figures and is expected to double in the coming weeks.
Mysticgeek: Could you elaborate on the circumstances surrounding Stage6’s closure and DivX’s involvement, and how Vreel benefits from the current agreement?
Eoin: My understanding of the Stage6 situation is similar to what has been publicly reported. The platform was unexpectedly shut down, with the stated reason being high maintenance costs. DivX was also facing potential legal action from UMG at the time. Rumors also suggested a declined acquisition offer from Live Universe.
It’s important to clarify that Vreel does not own the DivX webplayer or codec; these remain the property of DivX. However, DivX has granted us permission to utilize their technology within the Vreel environment, enabling us to create a robust High Definition video platform with integrated features.
Mysticgeek: Many are eager to know when Vreel will be available to the general public. Can you provide an estimated timeframe?
Eoin: The anticipation is certainly mutual. Currently, we are addressing bugs identified during the closed beta, specifically issues related to aspect ratios and conversion speeds. We aim to resolve these problems before launching an open beta. A strong first impression is crucial, and we prefer a slight delay to ensure a fully functional platform.
Progress is proceeding well, and we anticipate resolving these issues within the next few days, alongside the testing of new features. Open beta testing will commence once these major concerns are addressed, but we will continue to accept users into the closed beta daily.
