Ex-Twitter AI Ethics Lead Warns of Musk's Influence on US Government

Criticism of Elon Musk's Impact on Government Efficiency and X
During a panel discussion at SXSW on Thursday, data scientist and nonprofit founder Rumman Chowdhury, formerly a director at Twitter’s machine ethics team, voiced strong criticisms directed at Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Chowdhury questioned how professionals can maintain productivity under challenging circumstances. She stated, “Maintaining operational functionality is paramount, even when facing funding uncertainties, potential job loss, and the constant stream of unconventional statements from a particular individual online.”
Concerns Regarding Staff Reductions and Cybersecurity
Musk and DOGE, with Musk providing advisory support, have implemented rapid staff reductions within various U.S. federal agencies.
These cuts have, in certain instances, created vulnerabilities in cybersecurity protocols.
The impact of these changes is already visible. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has experienced significant downsizing, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has reduced its workforce, and probationary employees at the Federal Aviation Administration have been terminated.
Parallels to Twitter's Experience
Chowdhury expressed concern over the resulting loss of expertise and the disruptive management approach.
She drew parallels to her experience at Twitter in 2022, following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform for $43 billion.
“Approximately 20% of Twitter’s workforce departed voluntarily prior to the acquisition,” Chowdhury explained. “Subsequently, an additional 30% were dismissed, representing a substantial overall reduction in personnel.”
She believes that the mere presence of Musk negatively impacted Twitter’s internal environment. “The pervasive influence of his leadership fundamentally altered Twitter’s organizational culture,” Chowdhury asserted.
Impact on the U.S. Government
Chowdhury highlighted the gravity of witnessing similar trends within the U.S. government.
She emphasized the critical role of governmental institutions in the lives of all Americans and individuals globally.
“While Twitter was a significant company, it does not equate to the importance of a functioning government,” Chowdhury stated. “Mr. Musk tends to foster chaotic environments, and constructive work is rarely achieved within chaos.”
X as a Platform for Ideological Promotion
Chowdhury also challenged Musk’s vision for X (formerly Twitter), linking it to his political inclinations.
She accused Musk of utilizing X as a tool to disseminate his personal ideology – essentially, a “megaphone” for his viewpoints.
“There is little room for debate regarding this matter,” Chowdhury declared. “The behavior of Elon Musk differs markedly from that of Jack Dorsey, the previous CEO of Twitter.”
She pointed out that Dorsey did not engage in the same level of direct intervention, such as frequent opinion-sharing, blocking users, or amplifying specific voices while labeling others as “terrorists.”
Dissemination of Misinformation on X
Reports indicate that Musk has shared misleading information concerning the 2024 U.S. presidential election, accumulating nearly 1.2 billion views on X.
Throughout this year, Musk has repeatedly made inaccurate statements regarding federal expenditures, Ukrainian military actions, and the functions of agencies like the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Questioning Fact-Checking Mechanisms
Musk has even cast doubt on X’s own fact-checking system, Community Notes, after it corrected inaccurate posts regarding the approval ratings of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“Community Notes is increasingly being manipulated by governments and traditional media outlets,” Musk claimed without providing supporting evidence.
