everyaction acquires mobilize, the democratic volunteering platform

EveryAction, a donor management platform serving the nonprofit sector, has agreed to purchase Mobilize, a company specializing in connecting Democratic campaigns with volunteers and facilitating activism for progressive initiatives. Mobilize, initially operating as MobilizeAmerica, originated from Higher Ground Labs, an organization dedicated to developing technology solutions for left-leaning political campaigns and causes.
This acquisition will allow EveryAction to integrate Mobilize’s organizing capabilities with its current client base of over 15,000 organizations, including prominent groups such as the Sierra Club and the Human Rights Campaign. EveryAction functions as the nonprofit-focused division of NGP VAN, a company that provides essential digital infrastructure for the Democratic Party. The financial details of the Mobilize acquisition have not been made public.
Established in early 2017, Mobilize experienced significant growth during the period of heightened activism following the 2016 election, becoming a widely used tool for progressive campaigns to convert online support into tangible action. The platform was utilized for outreach efforts by numerous candidates during the 2020 Democratic primary, including the campaign of now President-elect Joe Biden, which continued to employ Mobilize throughout the general election cycle.
Following the unexpected outcome of the 2016 election – and the innovative tactics employed by the winning campaign – Democrats increasingly turned to the startup community to develop new and improved tools. The past four years have served as a period of experimentation for Democratic political startups, and 2020 marks a potential turning point for these ventures.
Earlier in the year, Mobilize secured $3.75 million in Series A funding, led by Higher Ground Labs, a progressive technology incubator. Chris Sacca’s Lowercase Capital and Reid Hoffman, a LinkedIn co-founder and significant Democratic contributor, also participated in this funding round. The acquisition of Mobilize follows another recent development linked to Higher Ground Labs: in August, Social Capital, led by Chamath Palihapitiya, a former Facebook executive, acquired Hustle, a text banking platform.
As part of EveryAction, Mobilize will operate as a distinct unit under the continued leadership of Mobilize CEO and co-founder Alfred Johnson. The existing Mobilize team will transition to this new division within the EveryAction structure. Allen Kramer, Mobilize’s co-founder and president, will also join EveryAction as deputy general manager of organizing.
“EveryAction is the primary software provider for nonprofits, serving clients like the National Audubon Society, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and the United Nations Foundation,” Johnson stated to TechCrunch. “They are in a unique position to extend our leading event and volunteer management solutions to these important organizations.”
Prior to the acquisition, EveryAction and Mobilize were already connected through an integration on EveryAction’s platform, and Johnson described the news as a “logical progression” of their existing relationship. “Our companies share a common goal: to empower cause-driven organizations to expand their movements by increasing and strengthening supporter involvement,” Johnson explained. “Together, we can enable more individuals to contribute to positive change.”
