EU Signs $11B Deal for Satellite Constellation to Rival Starlink

EU Launches Ambitious Satellite Project to Compete with Starlink

The European Union is actively developing a network of internet satellites designed to challenge the dominance of Elon Musk’s Starlink. A contract valued at €10.6 billion (equivalent to $11.1 billion) has been finalized to deploy approximately 300 satellites into low and medium Earth orbits before the year 2030.

This initiative aims to strengthen the EU’s digital sovereignty by establishing a secure communication infrastructure for governmental use.

Iris²: A Public-Private Partnership

Initially unveiled in 2022, the Iris² (Infrastructure for Resilience, Interconnectivity and Security by Satellite) program represents a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors. The original cost projection of €6 billion increased by 76% following a complex negotiation period.

Ultimately, 61% of the program’s funding will originate from public sources. The remaining portion will be provided by SpaceRise, an industry consortium chosen in October.

SpaceRise comprises key players in the satellite industry, notably including Eutelsat, a leading French satellite operator. Eutelsat completed a merger with its European competitor, OneWeb, in 2022.

Starlink’s Current Position

In contrast, Starlink currently operates a substantial constellation of over 6,000 satellites. The service has surpassed 4 million subscribers and secured significant contracts with prominent companies like Royal Caribbean and United Airlines.

Furthermore, Starlink is preparing to introduce a direct-to-phone service in partnership with T-Mobile, expanding its reach and capabilities.

Key Features of the EU Initiative

  • Secure Communications: The primary goal is to provide secure and reliable communication channels for governmental bodies.
  • Digital Sovereignty: The project is intended to reduce reliance on foreign-owned satellite infrastructure.
  • Extensive Coverage: The planned constellation of nearly 300 satellites will offer broad coverage across Europe and beyond.

The EU’s investment in Iris² signifies a strategic move to establish a robust and independent space-based communication system, directly addressing the growing influence of commercial ventures like Starlink.
