Windows File Explorer Search: Type to Find Files

Adjusting File Explorer's Typing Behavior in Windows
Typically, Windows File Explorer will automatically navigate to folders starting with the characters you type when a window is open. While this functionality can be useful for some, it's possible to modify this setting.
Users who prefer to initiate a search directly can configure File Explorer to prioritize the search box upon typing.
How to Enable Direct Search
Begin by opening any File Explorer window. Then, click on the "File" menu located in the top left corner of the window.
From the File menu, select the option labeled "Change folder and search options." This will open the Folder Options window.
Within the Folder Options window, navigate to the "View" tab. Scroll down until you locate the section titled "When typing into list view."
Select the radio button next to "Automatically type into the Search Box." This ensures that typing will immediately activate the search function.
Finally, click the "OK" button to save your changes and close the Folder Options window.
Benefits of Direct Search
Once configured, opening File Explorer and beginning to type will instantly initiate a search.
This is a straightforward adjustment, but it requires knowing the setting exists to be utilized effectively. It streamlines the process of finding files and folders.
