Empathy Raises $30M to Support Bereavement with AI Assistant

Navigating Grief with Technology: Empathy Secures $30 Million Funding
Dealing with the loss of a loved one presents significant challenges, encompassing both emotional distress and complex logistical tasks. Often, the organizational burdens are intensified by the grief experienced by those left behind. Consequently, technological solutions designed to assist during these difficult times are gaining considerable momentum.
Empathy's Rise and Recent Investment
Empathy, a startup that recently transitioned out of stealth mode, has developed a digital assistant specifically tailored to support bereaved families. This assistant streamlines the navigation of post-death processes, offering a comprehensive suite of services. These range from providing access to grief counseling resources to facilitating estate planning and tax-related matters. The company has successfully secured $30 million in funding, reflecting strong market interest in its offerings.
This Series A funding round arrives only five months after Empathy’s initial $13 million seed round. Entrée Capital spearheaded the latest investment, with continued participation from previous investors including General Catalyst and Aleph (who jointly led the seed funding), alongside LocalGlobe, Primetime Partners, and notable angel investors. These include Shai Wininger (CEO & co-founder of Lemonade), Sir Ronald Cohen, John Kim (former president of New York Life), and Micha Kaufman (CEO & co-founder of Fiverr).
The company has chosen not to disclose its current valuation.
Rapid Growth and Market Penetration
The quick succession of funding rounds is largely attributed to Empathy’s ability to meet substantial early demand. Developed in Israel, the company strategically launched its services in the U.S. market. According to co-founder and CEO Ron Gura, Empathy has already captured a “significant single-digit percentage” of the market, with approximately 250,000 bereaved executors utilizing its services monthly.
These services encompass a broad spectrum, from practical tools for estate planning and tax management to links for counseling and emotional support.
Balancing Practicality and Emotional Needs
“Individuals seeking assistance fall into two categories: those focused on practical matters and those seeking emotional solace,” Gura explained. Successfully integrating these distinct needs within a single platform is a notable accomplishment, as offering both simultaneously could potentially alienate users seeking only one type of support.
Strategic Partnerships and Expansion
Empathy is actively expanding its reach through partnerships with key stakeholders in the end-of-life care sector, including hospice centers and funeral homes. Currently, the company collaborates with over 300 cemeteries and 72 funeral homes, who refer clients to Empathy’s services.
This collaboration stems from the fact that grieving families frequently turn to these professionals for guidance. However, these professionals are often focused on their primary responsibilities and may have limited resources to address the broader range of needs arising after a loss.
“Hospice coordinators are often the first point of contact when families face the reality of loss,” Gura stated, “and they are dedicated to providing support, but they are constrained by time and resources as they must attend to subsequent families.”
He added, with a touch of irony, “The funeral director often serves as the closest equivalent to a concierge in this situation.”
A Necessary Service
While undeniably challenging, end-of-life arrangements are an unavoidable aspect of life. The emergence of a company offering assistance that alleviates the burden of navigating these complexities – in a manner that is both accessible and reasonably priced (with some services offered free of charge) – is a positive development.
Investor Confidence
“We are pleased to continue our support of Empathy as it solidifies its leadership position within the end-of-life industry and delivers a vital service to families experiencing loss,” commented Joel Cutler, MD of General Catalyst. “Empathy has demonstrated both its dedication and its ability to connect with diverse audiences through strategic partnerships and by attracting top talent to advance its mission. We anticipate continued growth and a demonstrable impact on the lives of bereaved families.”
