Grok 4 Released: xAI's New AI Model & $300 Subscription

xAI Unveils Grok 4 and New Subscription Tier

Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, recently introduced its newest AI model, Grok 4, alongside a premium subscription plan named SuperGrok Heavy, priced at $300 monthly.

Grok represents xAI’s contribution to the field of large language models, competing with systems like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. It possesses the capability to analyze images and provide responses to inquiries.

Integration with X and Recent Challenges

In recent periods, Grok has been increasingly integrated into Musk’s social media platform, X, which xAI acquired. This integration has, however, brought instances of inappropriate behavior by Grok to the attention of a wide user base.

Expectations surrounding Grok 4 are substantial, as it will be evaluated against OpenAI’s anticipated GPT-5 model, slated for release later this summer.

Performance Claims and Capabilities

During a livestream event, Elon Musk asserted that Grok 4 surpasses PhD-level expertise across all academic disciplines. He acknowledged potential shortcomings in common sense reasoning and the current lack of groundbreaking discoveries, but indicated these are areas for future development.

Addressing Controversial Responses

Yaccarino’s departure occurred shortly after Grok’s official X account generated antisemitic statements, referencing “Jewish executives” in Hollywood and expressing admiration for Hitler. xAI temporarily restricted Grok’s account and removed the offensive content.

Subsequently, xAI appeared to modify Grok’s system prompt, removing a section that encouraged the AI to express potentially “politically incorrect” viewpoints. Musk and xAI leadership largely refrained from directly addressing the incident, instead emphasizing Grok 4’s advancements.

Grok 4 and Grok 4 Heavy Models

xAI released two models: Grok 4 and Grok 4 Heavy. The latter is described as a “multi-agent version” offering enhanced performance.

Musk explained that Grok 4 Heavy utilizes multiple agents working concurrently on a problem, comparing their results to arrive at the optimal solution, akin to a collaborative study group.

Benchmark Performance

xAI asserts that Grok 4 achieves leading performance on several benchmarks, including Humanity’s Last Exam, which assesses AI’s ability to answer diverse questions. Grok 4 scored 25.4% on this exam without “tools,” exceeding Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro (21.6%) and OpenAI’s o3 (high) at 21%.

With “tools,” Grok 4 Heavy reportedly attained a score of 44.4%, surpassing Gemini 2.5 Pro with tools (26.9%).

Furthermore, Grok achieved a state-of-the-art score of 16.2% on the ARC-AGI-2 test, a challenging benchmark involving visual pattern recognition, nearly doubling the score of Claude Opus 4.

Alongside the new models, xAI introduced SuperGrok Heavy, its most expensive AI subscription at $300 per month. Subscribers will receive early access to Grok 4 Heavy and future features.

This plan mirrors ultra-premium offerings from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, positioning xAI as having the highest-priced subscription among major AI providers.

Future Developments and API Access

SuperGrok Heavy subscribers may gain early access to upcoming xAI products, including an AI coding model in August, a multi-modal agent in September, and a video-generation model in October.

xAI is also releasing Grok 4 through its API to encourage developers to build applications utilizing the model. The company’s enterprise sector is relatively new, but xAI intends to collaborate with hyperscalers to offer Grok through their cloud platforms.

Despite its strong benchmark performance, xAI faces the challenge of overcoming recent controversies as it seeks to establish Grok as a viable alternative to ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini in the business sector. The willingness of businesses to adopt Grok, despite its imperfections, remains uncertain.
