xAI Secures $6 Billion in Series C Funding

A recent update, as of December 25th at 12:21 p.m. Pacific Time, has revealed further specifics regarding xAI’s valuation and the investment made by Kingdom Holdings.

xAI, the artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk, has successfully completed a Series C financing round, securing a substantial $6 billion in investment.

Investor Participation

This week’s announcement detailed the involvement of numerous prominent investors. Among those participating were Andreessen Horowitz, BlackRock, Fidelity, Lightspeed, MGX, Morgan Stanley, OIA, QIA, Sequoia Capital, Valor Equity Partners, Vy Capital, Nvidia, and AMD.

According to a public filing, Kingdom Holdings, a Saudi Arabian conglomerate, contributed approximately $400 million to this funding round.

Valuation and Total Funding

The same filing indicated that xAI’s current valuation has reached $45 billion, nearly doubling its prior assessment.

With this latest infusion of capital, the total amount raised by xAI now stands at $12 billion. This figure includes the $6 billion secured in a previous tranche during May of this year.

Investment Restrictions and Future Plans

Reports from the Financial Times suggest that participation in this funding round was limited to investors who had previously supported xAI in earlier fundraising efforts.

It has been reported that investors who provided financial backing for Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter were granted access to up to 25% of xAI’s shares.

xAI stated, “Our most capable model to date is currently undergoing training, and our primary focus is now on the launch of innovative products for both consumers and businesses.”

The company further explained that the funds obtained through this financing will be allocated to enhance its advanced infrastructure, facilitate the release of groundbreaking products, and expedite ongoing research and development initiatives.

Advancing Artificial Intelligence Capabilities

xAI was established by Elon Musk last year. Shortly thereafter, the company unveiled Grok, its primary generative AI model. This model currently powers several features on the X platform, including a chatbot accessible to both X Premium subscribers and, in certain regions, general users.

Grok possesses what Musk characterizes as “a rebellious nature” – a propensity to respond to inquiries deemed inappropriate by many other AI systems. For instance, if prompted to use vulgar language, Grok will readily comply, employing profanities and expressive phrasing not found in systems like ChatGPT.

Musk has criticized ChatGPT and similar AI systems for being excessively “woke” and “politically correct.” This is despite Grok’s own limitations in addressing sensitive political topics and its tendency to avoid definitive stances. He also positions Grok as “maximally truth-seeking” and less prejudiced than competing models, although evidence suggests a leaning towards left-leaning perspectives.

Throughout the past year, Grok has become increasingly integrated into X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter. Initially, Grok was exclusively available to X users, and to developers with the technical skills to implement the “open source” version.

Through an integration with xAI’s internally developed image generation model, Aurora, Grok is now capable of creating images directly on X, albeit without content restrictions, which has sparked controversy. The model can also analyze images and provide summaries of news and current trends – though with occasional inaccuracies.

Indications suggest that Grok may assume responsibility for even more X functionalities in the future. These potential enhancements include improvements to X’s search functionality, user profile descriptions, and assistance with post performance analytics and reply management. A “Grok button” was recently introduced to X, intended to help users find “relevant context” and explore trending topics and real-time events.

xAI is rapidly working to compete with established leaders in the generative AI field, such as OpenAI and Anthropic. The company launched an API in October, enabling developers to incorporate Grok into external applications, platforms, and services. Furthermore, a standalone Grok iOS app has recently been released to a limited group of beta testers.

Musk maintains that the competitive landscape has been uneven.

A legal action filed against OpenAI and Microsoft, a close partner of OpenAI, alleges that OpenAI is “actively attempting to eliminate competitors” like xAI by “securing commitments from investors to withhold funding.” Musk’s legal team also argues that OpenAI unfairly benefits from Microsoft’s infrastructure and expertise, effectively constituting a “de facto merger.”

However, Musk frequently asserts that X’s data provides xAI with a competitive advantage. Last month, X revised its privacy policy to permit third parties, including xAI, to utilize X posts for model training purposes.

It is important to remember that Musk was a founding member of OpenAI, but departed in 2018 due to disagreements regarding the company’s strategic direction. He has previously claimed in legal filings that OpenAI profited from his initial contributions while abandoning its commitment to making AI research accessible to the public.

OpenAI, predictably, disputes Musk’s account of events. In a statement released in mid-December, the company dismissed Musk’s lawsuit as misleading, unfounded, and motivated by resentment.

The Expanding xAI Network

xAI envisions a system where its artificial intelligence models are developed utilizing data originating from Elon Musk’s diverse portfolio of companies, notably including Tesla and SpaceX. This approach aims to facilitate technological advancements across these affiliated organizations. Currently, xAI provides customer support functionalities for SpaceX’s Starlink internet service, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Furthermore, discussions are underway with Tesla regarding a potential research and development partnership, with xAI potentially receiving a portion of the car manufacturer’s revenue in return.

However, this strategy has encountered opposition from Tesla shareholders. Legal action has been initiated by several investors who contend that Musk’s establishment of xAI represents a diversion of both skilled personnel and vital resources from Tesla, effectively creating a competitive entity.

Despite these challenges, xAI’s revenue has reached approximately $100 million annually, driven by both developer-focused and consumer-facing products. For context, Anthropic is projected to generate $1 billion in revenue this year, while OpenAI is aiming for $4 billion by the close of 2024.

Elon Musk announced this summer that the next iteration of Grok models is being trained at xAI’s data center in Memphis. This facility was constructed remarkably quickly, in just 122 days, and currently relies partially on portable diesel generators for power.

The company intends to expand the server farm, which currently houses 100,000 Nvidia GPUs, by doubling its capacity next year. GPUs are preferred for AI model training and operation due to their parallel processing capabilities.

In November, xAI received approval from the Memphis regional power authority for an additional 150MW of power – sufficient to supply roughly 100,000 homes. As part of this agreement, xAI committed to enhancing the city’s water quality and providing discounted Tesla batteries to the Memphis power grid.

However, some local residents have voiced concerns that this expansion could strain the grid and negatively impact air quality in the region.

The upgraded data center is also anticipated to play a crucial role in enhancing Tesla’s autonomous driving technologies.

xAI has experienced significant operational growth since its inception, increasing its workforce from a dozen employees in March 2023 to over 100 currently. In October, the company relocated to the former corporate offices of OpenAI in San Francisco’s Mission district.

xAI has communicated to investors its plans to secure additional funding in the coming year.

It will not be alone in seeking substantial investment. Anthropic recently obtained $4 billion from Amazon, bringing its total funding to $13.7 billion, while OpenAI secured $6.6 billion in October, increasing its total to $17.9 billion.

Large-scale investments like those made in OpenAI and Anthropic propelled AI venture capital activity to $31.1 billion across more than 2,000 deals in the third quarter of 2024, according to data from PitchBook.
