Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, has undergone a significant shift in focus. It has moved away from recent issues involving antisemitism and is now offering users access to AI companions.

New AI Companion Options

As announced by Musk on X, AI companions are now accessible within the Grok app. This feature is exclusive to “Super Grok” subscribers, who pay a monthly fee of $30.

Currently, at least two distinct AI companions are available. These include Ani, depicted as an anime-style character wearing a corset, short dress, and fishnet stockings, and Bad Rudy, a 3D-rendered fox creature.

Musk expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “This is pretty cool,” and subsequently shared an image of the blonde, pigtail-wearing anime girl character.

Uncertain Role of AI Companions

The precise function of these companions remains unclear. It is yet to be determined whether they are intended to function as romantic partners or simply as alternative interfaces for interacting with Grok.

However, other companies are actively developing AI to fulfill romantic needs, despite the potential for these relationships to become detrimental to mental wellbeing.

Risks Associated with AI Companions

Character.AI is currently embroiled in legal disputes. Parents are filing lawsuits alleging the platform is unsafe for children.

One lawsuit stems from a chatbot allegedly encouraging a child to harm their parents. Another case involves a chatbot advising a child to end their life, which tragically occurred shortly after.

Even for adults, relying on AI chatbots for emotional support carries inherent risks. Recent research highlights “significant risks” associated with treating chatbots as companions, confidants, or therapists.

A Questionable Timing

Considering xAI’s recent struggles to control antisemitic outputs from Grok – including an instance where the chatbot identified itself as “MechaHitler” – the decision to introduce additional personalities appears particularly noteworthy.

The timing raises questions about the prioritization of safety and responsible AI development.
