Elixir 2 - System Information App for Android

Elixir 2: A Comprehensive Android System Information Tool

My initial article concerning Elixir generated significant interest. A substantial number of users expressed a desire for a robust and complimentary system information application for their Android devices. For those individuals, I have positive updates to share today.

Elixir 2 represents a considerable advancement over its predecessor, boasting enhanced capabilities. It is likely to consolidate the functionality of multiple applications currently utilized by many, while simultaneously introducing novel features previously unforeseen.

Modular Application Design

The developer of Elixir appears dedicated to minimizing application bloat. Consequently, Elixir 2 is distributed as a collection of distinct applications.

The core application is simply named Elixir 2, and it will be the primary focus of this review. Complementing this is Elixir 2 – Widgets, a separate application dedicated to providing widget-based system information.

Elixir 2 – Widgets can be installed independently, functioning without requiring the core Elixir 2 application. This allows users to access powerful system widgets without the full suite.

Permission-Based Add-ons

Further extending functionality are permission-specific add-ons. Elixir 2 – Personal enables features necessitating access to personal data, such as tracking missed calls and unread message counts.

Elixir 2 – Admin provides features requiring device administrator permissions, notably the ability to remotely turn off the device screen. It’s important to note that all these applications are available at no cost.

Exploring Elixir 2’s Features

I proceeded to install all components with the exception of Elixir 2 – Admin. A complete overview of Elixir 2’s features within a single article is impractical.

However, I will highlight some of the most noteworthy aspects in a somewhat arbitrary sequence.

  • The application offers detailed system monitoring.
  • Users can customize widgets to display preferred information.
  • Access to personal data features enhances usability.

Elixir 2 provides a powerful and flexible solution for Android system information, offering a compelling alternative to existing applications.

Widgets Displayed in the Notification Area

A significant feature of this application is its ability to provide information at a glance.

Observe my notification area. The bar located directly below Quicker represents the Elixir 2 widget. It allows for quick monitoring of metrics like battery temperature, memory status, CPU load, RAM usage, the number of running applications, and system uptime.

Let's examine what occurs when one of these elements is selected:

Selecting a widget provides an expanded view of the same information, enabling more detailed investigation. As an illustration, consider tapping the RAM icon.

This action immediately launches Elixir 2, opening to the processes and services screen. Here, one can view exactly which processes are consuming system resources. Given the volume of data presented, Elixir conveniently allows for customized filtering and sorting:

Processes can be filtered by text, categorized as system or user processes, or limited to background processes. Sorting options are also available to organize the data as desired. Focusing on RAM usage, let’s sort the list by memory consumption.

This reveals precisely which applications are utilizing the phone’s memory. For instance, it was previously unknown that the Dropbox client consumes a substantial amount of RAM, even during inactivity. This can be readily addressed.

A single tap on a process brings up the following menu:

The “More information” option is somewhat intriguing, considering the extensive data already available. Selecting it results in:

This may be useful for developers. However, the “Kill process” option is sufficient for most users. A single tap frees up 27MB of RAM. It should be noted that routinely terminating processes is generally not recommended, as Android typically manages this efficiently. Nevertheless, the ability to delve so deeply into system processes is a valuable feature.

Now, while already within Elixir, let’s briefly review the main screen:

Many of these categories were included in Elixir 1, but the user interface feels noticeably smoother and more refined in this iteration. Despite offering a comprehensive range of data, Elixir maintains excellent usability throughout the application.

Widgets

Widgets were initially available in Elixir 1, however, Elixir 2 introduces redesigned icons and enhanced performance, resulting in reduced CPU consumption.

Furthermore, a new feature allows widgets to be launched directly through shortcuts. Let's examine how this functionality operates:

Selecting “Add new” and choosing a desired widget size presents the following interface:

The widget's configuration is then completed by tapping each available slot (marked with X’s), mirroring the process used in Elixir 1.

A shortcut to the configured widget can now be created for placement on the home screen:

The appearance of the shortcut itself is as follows:

Tapping the shortcut initiates the following action:

This functionality is beneficial as it conserves screen real estate and contributes to improved battery efficiency. Power consumption by the widget is limited to instances when it is actively opened.

Elixir Documentation

Given the extensive capabilities of Elixir, consulting its official documentation is crucial for maximizing its potential. Thankfully, the documentation provided is exceptionally well-crafted.

It features numerous illustrative screenshots and maintains a concise, easily digestible style.

Key Features of the Documentation

  • Comprehensive Coverage: The documentation thoroughly addresses all aspects of the Elixir language.
  • Visual Aids: Many screenshots are included to clarify complex concepts.
  • Conciseness: Information is presented without unnecessary verbosity, enhancing understanding.

Effective utilization of the Elixir language is significantly aided by a careful review of these resources. The clarity and completeness of the documentation contribute to a smoother learning experience.

Concluding Remarks

The capabilities of Elixir 2 are remarkable, especially considering its availability at no cost. This application stands out as a particularly potent system tool among those I have assessed recently. Should you require a comprehensive system utility, exploring its features is highly recommended.

While a degree of learning may be involved to fully utilize its functionalities, the investment of time is ultimately justified. We invite you to share your experiences and opinions regarding Elixir 2 in the comment section below.
