Eclipse Foods Plant-Based Ice Cream Now at Whole Foods

Eclipse Foods Aims to Disrupt the Ice Cream Market
Demand for plant-based meat substitutes is currently at its peak. Consequently, Eclipse Foods is strategically positioned to replicate the success achieved by companies such as Impossible and Beyond – but within the ice cream sector.
Prior to the global pandemic, the company had already announced limited retail distribution in New York City and its home base of San Francisco. Now, Eclipse Foods is broadening its reach through a significant retail collaboration.
Company Funding and Approach
Established in early 2019, Eclipse Foods has secured approximately $16 million in funding, including investment from Y Combinator (YC). CEO Aylon Steinhart previously explained to TechCrunch that the company’s core strategy centers on offering a straightforward alternative food option.
“Our approach doesn’t rely on costly biotechnology,” Steinhart stated. “Instead, we leverage our extensive knowledge of plant proteins and their functionality to combine plants in a remarkably simple manner.”
Mimicking Dairy Ice Cream
Eclipse Foods remains focused on closely replicating the taste and texture of traditional dairy ice cream. The company believes this is key to wider consumer acceptance.
“This entry into Whole Foods Market, a retailer known for its commitment to premium ingredients and high-quality products, represents a pivotal step for Eclipse as we expand our retail footprint across the country,” Steinhart announced.
Initial Rollout
The plant-based ice cream will initially be available at select Whole Foods Market stores in Northern California. This phased rollout allows for careful monitoring and optimization of distribution.
Eclipse Foods is hoping to capitalize on the growing consumer interest in plant-based alternatives, specifically within the frozen dessert category.
